First contact: Phone or Digital?

Leading up to 2000 the best recruiters were connecting with passive candidates through in person networking, cold calls and probably still getting faxed resumes at times! Networking in person still adds the most value in my opinion, especially if you speak "technical". The phone is without a doubt still necessary and still the most…

When Should Early Stage Companies Hire Recruiters?

answered this question on LinkedIN today, and thought the response would be of interest to our readers:

At what point do startups need outside help to find the right people for their open positions?

Start-ups need outside help in recruiting under three circumstances:

  1. The need for talent goes beyond the contact base of the founders and their acquaintances. This could be for greater technical skill, Sales execs who can establish strategic…

Can Quora Help Staffing Professionals?

Staffing professionals need more than great staffing software to help them do their jobs. They need to know what other tools are out there and how they can be used for top-notch recruitment.

I recently learned about Quora, a social networking site that describes itself as “a continually improving collection of questions and answers created, edited, and organized by everyone who…

Linked In for Everybody: The Radical Version

Radical Quebec: Newbies to Recruiting:

This is a copy of the presentation I recently gave at Radical Quebec. I chose to use it as my blog as I believe many of the points used, should be reviewed by others. Enjoy the read.  Dan

What is Recruiting? To me recruiting is the ability to fill a need or an opening with someone qualified to fulfill on said need or opening. It’s looking into your rolodex of contacts and matching column A (the person) with column B (the opening)…

Integration is key for utilizing recruiting metrics!

I think we can all agree that collecting recruiting metrics in your recruitment process is important!  Not only does it help you understand what's working and what's not in your recruitment funnel but it enables you to make actionable decisions on your recruitment marketing mix and strategy.

The key, however, is creating a dashboard of sorts within your recruitment process that enables you to view…

How Long Should You Wait from "Hello" to "You're Hired"?

We know finding the right candidate can be like finding a needle in a haystack. You want to be sure you hire the right one, so it’s logical you want to take your time. But don’t let time be an interference.

The hiring process should be about getting to know the candidate to figure out if they’re the right fit for the position. It shouldn’t have to be lengthy process (although sometimes it’s inevitable).

Realistically, this process should take no more than four…

Those Darn Work Distractions!

Did you know that, according to a study done by Basex, the average time spent being interrupted in a typical work day and getting back into a groove is 2.1 hours? This is almost 1/3 of a person’s time at work! The internet has been a blessing and a curse for the world of the employed. Employees forward fun emails between each other all the time and social networking is practiced consistently at any job with computers available. I know what you’re thinking. You are scared now. Distractions…

The most important Activity in Search: Filtering Information

Finding the best candidates for a job opening is a process of elimination. Information filtering is used to bring candidates or aspects about them to our attention. Specifically in recruiting, filtering information with a computer introduces a high risk of losing the best candidates. Here I discuss the filtering of candidates from an available pool generated i.e. through marketing or from an existing resume database.

The search process is a path of four stages from a potentially… Continue

Why to Interview the Company More Than They Interview You

You’ve been working hard to put your resume in the best noticeable format, you’ve contacted everyone in your network, and you’ve posted to every job board you can think of.  Within a few days, the calls start coming in and you have first interviews scheduled for all of next week.  You have prepared studying interview questions, and looking into the company to have some idea who you might be working with in your future.  You get to the interview, sit down, your hands begin to sweat and…

How to find success in recruiting

Put the time in. Be a student and keep learning.

I was inspired to write this post after reading a blog I look forward to each morning, http://www.thesimpledollar.com/ It's a personal finance blog, written by Trent Hamm, and for him it was a hobby that turned into a full-time job. In today's post, "The Limits You Choose", he addresses how many people make excuses for not finding success by saying they just don't have the…

Who Moved My Cheese? A few lessons from an Ever Changing World.....

Change.  It's a word that sparks both intrigue and delight, irritation and zest, as well puts on the table very interesting circumstances.  This week my work prepares for an office change, and with it comes intriguing moments that will test our courage as we accept the new, and let die the old.  The past is behind us, and we have a gift of now.  Here are some quotes that caught my eye on change this week:

"There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to…

A controversial look at what to do when the ‘chips are down’

Recruitment consultants are Sales people. Full Stop. Sales people have their ups and downs and so do Recruitment consultants. Full Stop. The key difference is that Recruitment consultants hate being referred to as Sales people. Full Stop. Hence they do not overcome their ‘down time’ as efficiently as Sales people. Full Stop. Worse still, many recruitment managers do not believe their consultants should have down times. Full Stop.

Hence…

Research - To find it, you must understand it!!!!!

Research - To find it, you must understand it!!!!!

Research Comes First – Research is the key to success for any great sourcer. Research to learn what you are looking for, what it might be called or known as, and were it might be found. Research is the beginning step for all great sourcers. Every great sourcer should have an organized library of resources. Whether this comes in the form of organized bookmarks and favorites or a notebook, it…

How NOT to Get a Job

I recently had the unpleasant task of sorting through over 250 applicants who had applied to a job posting. Grant you, I did say the position was entry-level, so I knew that I'd get a lot of 'kids' who haven't had much experience job hunting. But I was still surprised at how poorly most of these candidates handled sending an email and their resume. So this blog is dedicated to the young and ignorant, and…

Job Boards Are Still Alive?

I’ve recently been thinking about the long-term effectiveness of job boards like Monster and TheLadders.

I am impressed with the way these two job boards have grown to dominate their marketplace. It took a lot of ingenuity, hard work, and marketing savvy. And ultimately, they both do what they claim to do: match up companies and…

Lessons learned from Charlie Sheen

DISCLAIMER: First and foremost, I don't condone excessive partying under most circumstances and never condone domestic violence or abuse in any form so spare me the moral and judgmental responses.  I live in a glass house.

Many consider Charlie Sheen a playboy, a genius, an addict, honest, an abuser, a top actor and in some circles, simply crazy.  Perhaps all may true…

Where is the talent in IT?

Information technology, although it’s been a part of business for many years it has been a stronger influence lately.  Business has accepted that information technology is here to stay and that a budget needs to be allotted for IT.  While that seems like a simple concept we must consider that IT is its own world with its own language and it changes very rapidly, this can be difficult for business.  IT has been in business for some time and there is talent out there that knows everything…

How the Recruitment Industry has Changed

I answered this question on LinkedIN today, and thought our readers would appreciate the response:

How has the recruitment industry changed in the past 30 years?

The biggest change in the recruitment business has been the evolution of automation – software and hardware.  In the mid 80’s we had databases on “dumb” terminals that cost mid 5 figures for a small office to buy.  But, if you would code your…
