What’s the BIG DEAL about your RESUME?

Honestly, ask 10 different people for an opinion on your resume and you’ll get ten different answers. So what’s the big deal anyway? The big deal is this - like it or not, the resume is your “golden ticket” (ala American Idol) to getting that interview. You have approximately ten seconds of a recruiters attention span to showcase your qualifications and land that interview. If there is not enough compelling and relevant information that fits the need they are looking to fill, you’ve lost them.… Continue

The Career Traffic Jam

This is not a news flash-the party is over. Long gone are the days where you work for one employer your entire career, collect a pension and retire with your golden ring. The economy and market changed several years ago to one that saw employees jumping ship like a game of musical chairs and employers snatching from competitors like thieves in the night. The end result was job seekers with an over-inflated view of their true worth in the marketplace and companies that were mistaken in their… Continue

Are you really “looking” for a job?

There are a lot of people who say they are looking for a job. The questions I’d have for these folks would be:

Are they prepared for the job when they find it?

Do they really know how to look?

It’s easy to confuse being busy with being productive. When you are engaged in a job search, you must be sure you are doing activities that are going to help you achieve the goal of finding employment. Looking for a job is not necessarily one of these activities. You need to be… Continue

How New York is killing the economy

In their infinite wisdom, the MTA of New York voted to affirm a doomsday plan and budget that will significantly increase commuting costs around the metro New York area - just another obstacle that recruiters in the area need to address.

This is another brilliant plan by overpaid bureaucrats that once again fails to address the need to re-engineer thousands of processes in favor of 25% fare hikes. I guess… Continue

Dear AIG: I Quit!

If you're not a link clicker, at least click this one and read the letter from Jake DeSantis to Edward Liddy, CEO of AIG.

With the global recession pressing down on every aspect of our lives, it has become painfully obvious that most recruiters and hiring managers have very little skill in selecting people based upon leadership needs or potential.

Perhaps the solution is to select solely on the ability… Continue

Who's the Boss?

Dear Claudia,

My company just went through a series of layoffs, and in an unexpected turn of events I have been promoted to replace the manager of our small recruiting team. One of the remaining recruiters is really angry that I was given the promotion; she’s been with the company longer, and says she was being groomed for the job by our old boss (who was let go in the last round of layoffs). As you might imagine, between the layoffs and the politics our office is not a fun place…

LinkedIn Tips and Tricks

LinkedIn Tips and Tricks

I wanted to share my experience and some quick LinkedIn tips with everyone in this first blog post. It all started when I was new to recruiting in the nuclear industry sector. My biggest challenge was in finding candidates for expatriate assignments. I immediately started scourging the job boards and turning them upside down for the right candidates for my highly specific jobs. To add a cherry to the cake, the skills criteria for candidates were… Continue

Bountyjobs abilty to build client relationships

I would also like to suggest in their marketing role, they suggest once a recruiter becomes engaged, one phone call is allowed to find out the minute details of this opportunity. Nail your Interview!

I usually don't plug other people's services on this blog, but in these difficult times you need to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack when you interview. I have worked with Greg Chenevert for a few years now and have found him to be the most effective coach on all things related to communication. He has worked to help all types of people improve their communications in the areas of sales, interviewing, networking, writing. Even political… Continue

Salaries experience a big freeze

In February I discussed Land Rovers decision to cut working hours and freeze all pay increases, in order to save jobs. At this time research published by www.recruiter.co.uk suggested that workers would rather take a pay cut than loose their jobs altogether, well this seems to be the case at Honda in Swindon.

Yesterday Honda announced redundancies, wage cuts and pay freezes were to take place at its Swindon factory as a result of the current economic problems experienced in the motor… Continue

Dartboard Sourcing

ERE has been so kind as to publish one of my how-to's:

Many sourcing expeditions are doomed to failure because the sourcer “assumes” they have found what the customer wants. The fact is, in these instances, the sourcer hasn’t asked enough questions of the customer on the front end of the process to know what the customer wants. This is because they do not possess the depth of experience in sourcing to know what questions to… Continue
