what books would you recommend to a beginner??

There's always been that one good book or great video that someone kept or refers to when they start out in recruiting.  Being that there is so much to chose from out there with mixed reviews.... how does someone like me who is a beginner choose??

So Please, to all the great recruiters that wouldn't mind sharing some advice as to what books, videos, webinars, sites to look at or read would be a great help to all the "rookies"  like me ?

Don’t let your Job Ad Messaging become a Recruiting Bottleneck!

So we’ve all seen this story before.  You posted your new job to your recruiting channels this morning and when you take a look at your ATS the next day you see a discouraging sight: NO applicants.  You wonder what’s wrong with your recruiting funnel and instantly take a look at your recruiting metrics to identify the potential bottleneck.  Starting at the beginning of the…

Is compliance finally sexy?

This is of particular relevance (and maybe more so) to the UK market right now especially with changes being made to the legal status of temporary workers and the plan to give them the same rights as permanent employees after 12 weeks of employment - called the Agency Workers Rights or AWR legislation. This is under consultation right now but is due to be enshrined in law as of Oct 1st 2011.

My reason for posing the above question is that compliance has always been one of…

The Ever expanding staffing function!!!

The Ever expanding staffing function!!!

So this is going to be the start of a 5 part series in the expansion of the staffing function. What I mean by expanding is not that we as staffing professional are expanding what we do, although that will be a subject of future posts. But rather that the SLC((Staffing Lifecycle)see past blog postings) is being broken apart into separate functions or specialties.

Just as HR, which once encompassed everything, and is now broken…

Judo, Golf, Scuba Diving and Personality Fit

As many of my followers know I am quite active within the Victorian Judo scene. I have been involved in Judo on and off since I was about ten. Over that time I have trained, competed and coached with participants ranging from novices through to the sport’s elites.

Over this time I have observed that…

What’s New with eEmpACT v16?

How did we make eEmpACT software even more user-friendly for our nationwide network of staffing agency clients? By making it mobile!

In October, we introduced our latest staffing software upgrade. Version 16 of our eEmpACT staffing software now features iPhone and iPad integration, allowing new mobile capabilities. US Job Market grows 4.1% in March 2011

The job market in the United States grew 4.1% in March as compared to February. The expansion in March did not meet our expectations. We expected a higher increase in labor demand for this time of year. The moderate growth may be a reflection of the significant developments in Japan and the Arab countries.

The benefits & limitations of White Label technology

For any recruitment technology, there comes a point when they need to decide how they are going to expand and innovate their platform.  Do they build in-house or do they look for partnerships with white label technology providers?

There are positives and negatives of both strategies, however, let’s take a look specifically at white label technologies and the value it provides to technology solutions.  White Label technology providers create and innovate solutions that are…

Unusual interview questions......

I had dinner with a group of ex colleagues last night - one of those get togethers that happens once every 2 - 3 years and where you spend all evening catching up on what happened to so and so etc. Was great fun but, I was reminded of something that made me laugh regarding unusual interview questions and I thought I'd share it.

One of the guys who still works with this very well known american technology company said that he had got divorced just a year or so ago. He felt…

How Important are Work Ethics to You?

Ethics are a big deal in the corporate world. Companies want to be seen as ethical, therefore making them a top notch company to work for and trust in. Not only should a company be ethical, but so should their employees. Would you work for an unethical company just because you need a job? Some people would, but you need to figure out for yourself how important ethics are to you!

We have all seen the scandals on TV…

The danger of ‘big’ – it sometimes goes away

One of the first business lessons I learned many years ago was that it is often better to havemany smaller customers than fewer large ones. At the time, I was learning the ropes from a battle-hardened magazine publisher. He said (in reference to my naive comment that I would rather have Microsoft as an advertiser than a dozen smaller ones), “Where are you when your big customer decides to ‘shift focus’? Your loss will be 100% of income, rather than 15% or 20%. How long does…

Fixes for Employee Morale

Keeping people happy especially when it’s a group of people is a difficult task, combine that with all of the other uncontrollable factors in business and you’ve got yourself a challenge.  In a recent article published by Kate Page, she defines results from a study asking employees and managers to rank 10 job characteristics, and then posted the top five (Page, 2011).  They are as follows:

Employees seek:

  1. Appreciation for their work
  2. Feeling part of…

Review of the new Monster iPad app

I was invited to Soho to review the new Monster recruitment app that launched last week. Sadly, I was rather unwell and could not attend but my colleague, who works in recruitment software development, attended in my stead and perhaps this was a better person to review it anyway.

‘Although the venue, Bar Chocolate, had a slightly misleading name as there didn’t appear to be any chocolate, the promise of nibbles and free beer put me in a positive frame of mind.

I will start by…

"You want to leave your job because ?? !!"

A question I always ask at interviews is “Why do you want to leave your current job?” and then delve deeper to understand their ‘real’ motivation to leave. I’ve learnt not to be satisfied with standard responses such as ‘better opportunities’, ‘career prospects’, location, compensation, lifestyle choice………….whatever

So, the other day when this young 20 something answers, “For career stability and improving my work / life balance”, I probe further and realise it’s due to…

How busy recruiters save time

There's no way around it - recruiters are busy busy people. Now that's not a bad thing and anyone in recruitment will support me - it is one of the most exciting and challenging career paths you could wish for! But the truth is that there are a lot of elements that go into being a successful recruiter AND there are only a certain number of hours in the day.
Recruiters need to know their employers well - they need to understand the work…
