Generation R...a case of over-promotion?

The word ‘Generation’ followed by a single letter must strike fear into the hearts of most readers. We’ve probably had our fill of analysing and debating the word when suffixed with X or Y, or prefixed with i...hell, I even blogged ‘Still Got Those talking Gen Y Blues’ at TruLondon!

Generation R is new though, and different. Whilst the more well known generational classifications usually define age groups by their cultural, socio-economic and parental influences, and are often… Continue

Really, You Want ME to Write YOU a LinkedIn Recommendation

During my professional career, I've been fortunate to be able to take advantage of some fantastic opportunities. As I result; I've developed an amazing network of friends and colleagues. I've personally tapped these fine folks when applying to various opportunities of interest and expect to continue to leverage these connections throughout my career. Since I've become more senior in my career, I knew that eventually I would be called upon to recommend someone else. Here's what happened, I…

"Candidate Presentation" - That First Impression!

Years ago when presenting candidates to hiring managers I was able to get the hiring managers on the phone and verbalize the presentation, create the interest and nail down the interview. At times I would get a request for the resume and agree to faxing it (remember those times?) after the interview was set. Most of the time though I was able to assure the hiring manager the…

Building a Sourcing Strategy: Retail / Manufacturer

For the fun of it, I want to provide a variety of insights around how a sourcing strategy may vary by industry. For the sake of this example, let’s assume you are a manufacturer of a product that is sold through a retail distribution

chain. Additional assumptions are:

1. You sell product to big box retailers, however you have your own retail outlets

2. Holidays drive an increase in labor needs within your…

3 Fundamentals of Recruiting

Recruiters, let me tell you something. We’ve lost the basics of recruiting. It’s been replaced with idealistic disillusioned recruitment methods. The problem with most Recruiters is that we get some social media knowledge. A little info or a nugget and we become experts overnight. The fact is, you don’t know what the hell you are talking about. None of us do. That’s why were frickin’ recruiters to begin with.

Recruiting is not rocket science. In fact, it’s very simple. It’s finding… Continue

It's 4/20... puff, puff, give (equal pay and opportunity to women)

You know what that means, right?

It's Equal Pay Day. (Please, you know I didn't mean that that 4/20)

Today is the day - we're told - that "symbolizes how far into 2010

women must work to earn what men earned in 2009"
.

Akin to "Tax Day" (the day you supposedly have to work until you make enough

Don't Be That Interviewee

Having been technical recruiters for over a decade, we’ve heard more feedback than a sound engineer for a metal band. From interviewees wearing sweatpants to people getting up to use the bathroom and never returning, we’ve heard it all. And, that’s the inspiration for our “Don’t be that interviewee”…

The Art of Simplicity as Taught by a Random Pedestrian

This morning I watched an older woman with a walker make her way down the sidewalk. Her movements were very deliberate and it was clear that her limbs would no longer cooperate to move her with any urgency or speed. In fact she shuffled more than she walked – it was the best she could muster.

What I found fascinating though was the effortless manner in which she used the walker. With each step forward on her right foot…
