We have all been there:
You have spent too long trying to fill a key position. At long last, someone emerges who appears to be an ideal fit. You are certain that she meets all of the technical qualifications. She has spent her career with an industry leader in your space where she gained ideal experience. She presents as very intelligent, capable and even has a sense of humour. She seems genuinely excited about all aspects of the business and is very happy with how you describe the…

#BeTheBird: Bird Watching and Culture.
Recently I had the opportunity of attending a Talent Net Live event hosted by JCPenney in Dallas, Texas. For those who don’t know, Talent Net is a social recruiting forum featuring big names in recruiting and social media covering the hottest tips and topics of the day for job seekers, social media enthusiasts and talent professionals. While I attended the event to learn more about up and coming social media tools and their…

On a visit to my brother's school (he's a principal), I noticed a whiteboard in his office with various notes on the school's vision written on it. "Brainstorming session?" I asked. He nodded.
I thought to myself that I wouldn't want to have been in that room when a group of people were throwing ideas against the wall to see which ones stick. Furthermore, there were…

We’ve been hearing lots lately about prospective employers asking for Facebook or other social media passwords, or asking to view a candidate’s private profile. We don’t think that a candidate should share this information, but it is important to recognize that the line between our private online activities and our public ones is blurring more and more by the day. So, if you are asked, how do you say no without damaging your chances of getting the job? There are a few key…

As a professional in the recruiting industry, you never know what your day could bring. Put a few good habits to work, so when things do go haywire, you can stay on route to closing more business.
Are you guilty of putting these lame excuses between yourself and opportunity?
1. Didn’t Have Access
Recruiting is a business based on people. And people can be a bit unpredictable at times. So don’t get caught off-guard. An investment in…

The longer you are out-of-work or are looking for a new position the more desperate you become. The more desperate you feel the more willing you are to do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do: things like work for lower pay, take a position that you know you are…

I am completely the wrong person to be writing this blog as I never celebrate any successes and instead think about ‘what’s next’, but I hear celebrating is supposed to be a good thing. So here goes with my hypocritical blog.
In all seriousness I can see the value in taking stock of one’s achievements. In this day and age where all we hear is negativity it can be difficult to actually get a grasp of your achievements as nothing ever seems to be good enough. I always feel…

I thought it was a great show today. That was my feeling while we were doing it. The pace was pretty fast, there was some relevant content and the guest seemed comfortable with the "culture" of the show. So, of course, I got slammed on the aftershow. I don't know what it is with these guys. They either over-rate me or under-rate me but they are rarely spot on.
Mind you, that's what I like about the Recruiting Animal Show - they get to air their opinions even if I don't agree. Though I…

Bill Radin's Winning Strategies for Recruiters
Joan was frustrated. A week had gone by since the hiring manager interviewed her top candidate; but since then, she couldn’t get him to return her calls or respond to her emails.
In the meantime, her candidate’s attitude was starting…

It is amazing to me how many people I meet who are not on LinkedIn. To them LinkedIn is just another social connection point, like Facebook, which they usually have. Having Facebook seems like enough for them, why have another socializing site? The response to potential candidates was felt worth sharing in case you have contacts that are still not on LinkedIn or lack the understanding of the difference between Facebook and LinkedIn:
Since it first went online in 2003,…

“So let me just clarify your position on this, Mr Client.
You spend 30 minutes telling me all the recruiters you have used so far are hopeless, they provide zero value, they can’t find the talent you want, their service is pathetic, and they do not understand your business.
Then, we spend hours going through your needs, you are excited because we really understand you and your role, and you are confident we can access…

This blog had to be posted today. See, today is the first Monday of the month – also known as “New Hire Orientation” day at my company. I had 4 new hires in today’s class, including an amazing employee referral. This candidate had applied to a handful of jobs, but I had not given much consideration to him until one of our employees brought up his name. This employee is one of our rock stars (forgive the overused term) so I thought I should take a 2nd look. I’m glad I did. After a…

As I mentioned last week, the results are in from the 2012 Job Board Industry Survey. With over 190 responses from every category of site, including aggregators, general sites, niche boards, and networks, I believe that there is useful information for all. If you participated, you should…
