How do you like my Big Data? Big Brother comes to Recruiting.

When Gerry Crispin was a boy hiring was so easy. There was lots of talent just lying all over the place.

All you had to do was put an ad in the paper and hire a secretary to open the resumes.

But, now, things are different.

You…

Long John Silvers, Tractors, and a Mannequin

In November 2012, I wrote a post called Whiskey, Wine and Root Beer http://wthomsonjr.com/november-2012/whiskey-wine-and-root-beer/ .  It was a fan favorite, and still to this day one of my favorite posts.  This weekend  my family and I  made the drive down to Carrizo Springs, TX again. …

What a Social Media Profile Can Tell You About a Potential Employee

Many a job has been lost due to revelations found in social media profiles that shared just a bit too much for the employer’s taste. According to a recent survey conducted by Jobvite, “nearly 3 out of 4 hiring managers and recruiters check candidates’ social profiles – 48% always do so, even if they are not provided.”

It’s clear that the internet is a very useful tool for…

NO! My employment brand is being damaged on Social Media!

disgruntled former employee wouldn’t normally be considered news worthy and wouldn’t get any coverage in traditional news outlets but social media gives him a forum to voice his opinion, potentially attracting similarly disgruntled employees. Together, they form a community with the sole purpose of bringing down the organization, whether by warning prospective employees against joining the organization on employer-review forums like Glassdoor or forming …

The Nobleness of Science & Technology

According to recent statistics, the number of bachelor's degrees earned by computer science majors from Ph.D. awarding U.S. universities has increased by nearly 20% in 2012 compared to 2011. This marked the third year in a row that we’ve seen the double-digit increase.

Who cares? We should all care and be infinitely happy that younger generations are realizing that not only is a degree relating to science and technology a lucrative career move, but it can almost be seen as a leap…

Boston Manhunt: Radical Accountability in Action

Our televisions were filled with scenes normally reserved for Hollywood and make-believe: gun wielding SWAT teams, military Humvees bristling with weaponry, shots fired, suspects killed and apprehended. A terrible tragedy that started with bombs ended with bittersweet triumph. A job well done. A commitment for justice met.

This is Radical…

Get a "Marmite" CV/Resume - or you'll be toast...

I have long held the view that people need to be a little braver with their CV's and resumes. Far too many people write their CV/resume so it offends nobody. Trouble is, it attracts nobody either.

marmite Just last week I had a candidate who sent me their CV.…

Social media, a positive step forward for recruitment or the beginning of its demise?

I recently lost a client because they bought the recruiter package on LinkedIn and were conducting there own recruitment efforts moving forward, this made me think is social media a threat or a blessing in disguise.

Recruiters Guide to Email Marketing and the Law. AKA Don't let CAN-SPAM make mince meat out of you

The laws surrounding email SPAM are somewhat of a mystery to many recruiters, with many actually violating the law on a regular basis without even know it. And that's scary because EACH separate email sent in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act may be subject to penalties of up to $16,000. That’s right, per email sent.

"Yikes", you say. "That’s a crap load of money," you exclaim.

"Yup it…

Hadouken-ing your client with an impact player!

If you search for Hadouken in the internet, you will find that it means a special attack in the Street Fighter series. Hadouken-ing (also know as Makankosappo; literally "Magic Penetrating Killing Ray") which is an Internet meme which started with Japanese schoolgirls photographing themselves apparently using, and being affected by, the special attack of the same name in the popular Dragon Ball franchise. The trend has now gone much wider and spread around the world.

Careers in Homeland Security Continue to Grow

Immediately after the September 11, 2001 disaster, a tide swelled for jobs within the new Homeland Security Department. More persons were patriotically charged and ready to jump into the career, envisioning themselves as making a difference in fighting terrorism.

Today, the title, "Homeland Security" reflects many careers now under that umbrella. College degrees are offered in universities, junior colleges and even online to build skills and expertise to prepare a person for a…

What Kind of Careers Benefit from Scrubs at Work

Traditionally, when we think of who may wear scrubs, we tend to think of hospital staff, surgeons, nurses and technicians. But, actually, scrubs are worn in many professions. They don’t have to be expensive. There are some great cheap scrubs available that are fashionable and will hold up under work conditions and wear for a long time.

If you are in the beauty industry and are a hairstylist, manicurist or even a pet groomer, you may wear scrubs. Medical professionals including…

So,this is recruiting now and we are ok with it?

Oh, did this did just happen to me?

Recently I was called by a recruiting agency recruiter.  The person, from Manpower, called me about a position that he was looking to fill for an engineering/technical recruiter.  I am not shocked by this as that is what we do for a living.  However what did shock me was the pedantic way in which the person went about it while leaving a message.  It was almost robotic in its…

The REKRUTR Vault: Workforce Disaster Planning

In light of the events in Boston this week, I thought this might be a good time to talk about disaster planning, and how it relates to recruiting.

Regardless of the disaster, be it natural or otherwise, it is important to know how your company, and/or those you recruit for, will react in emergency circumstances.  Many small businesses…

I know them, well do you really??

I know them, well do you really??

One of the things I see, and hear about all the time is how someone knows someone, who knows someone and how it either helps them get a job or stops them from getting a job. The interesting part is when the people who know people, knew them 1+ years ago, and yet still feel that what they know actually is still…

Recruiter to owner 4 years later

4 years ago this month I was asked to leave one of the largest contingency recruiting firms that I’d been with for 10 years. I had reached burnout and the grace to carry struggling recruiters had ceased regardless of past success as my company went from 40 recruiters to 10 in no time. As I sent my resume out to sales gigs I had offers left and right for jobs that paid $35k-$40k plus commission to sell a widget.

An independent recruiter and friend called me and reminded me that I…
