Recently, I came across a book called So Good They Can’t Ignore You – Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. In it, Cal Newport, Ph.D from Georgetown University, claims that following one’s passion might very well be terrible advice.
Instead, he feels that we need to leverage our skills, which will then lead to ultimate job satisfaction. Starting with passion, he states, is a dangerous path. What if we are passionate…

Isn’t it amazing how the simple beauty of the sun shining can change our outlook? After a long difficult winter I understand the phrase “hope springs eternal.”
It isn’t only the appearance of the sun that has raised my spirits. I took a stroll through the local mall this weekend and was encouraged to see the numbers of shoppers carrying bags of just purchased goods. This weekend I received a call from a friend who sold her house last week at a profit.
In addition, the staffing…

It's Saturday morning and I'm reflecting on my past week .....
I've been dealing with candidates and clients. Each have their own issues about 'getting through' - and that's when I realised we're stuck in a mindset (at least…

Recruitment is in itself a talent-detecting process, but what type of candidates would "hit the ground running"? and what type of headhunting detective are you?
In the planning process, the search for required candidates starts with a question in mind, should you start sourcing active candidates (who are actively searching for career opportunities), most probably because the active searchers are your lottery ticket to get a placement in the least amount of time! You think?…

Just like a golfer tees up the ball to optimize their drive for distance and accuracy - a Recruiter needs to prepare thoroughly before embarking on a candidate search, to maximize the chances for a successful outcome.
Proper qualification of a new requirement or job order is both a critical part of the recruiting process and great opportunity to further cement the…

The Clock and the Compass by Jon Bartos
Mark my words, 2013 will be a banner year for many in the Executive Search and Staffing industry. Yes, there are rumors that the first quarter could be slower than expected, much like the fourth quarter of 2012. So why am I so bullish on 2013?
Opportunity! There are…

We all know that it is important to spend time thinking about our businesses. You need to work on your business, as well as in your business, we are told.
This is not just good advice, it is vital advice.
But, I don’t have time
The problem is that we don’t have the time, or we don’t make the time. We are busy, we…

I have always been a fan of music. I love all kinds. I appreciate artists and their uniqueness. I guess I have always been that way. I can listen to Waylon Jennings "Ramblin' Man" one minute, "Kashmir" by Led Zepplin another, and then find myself dialed into XM Radio listening to The Highway all day long.
I was a music fanatic growing up. Listening to…

I have employed thousands of people over the years. And every time one resigned, a little part of me died. (OK, I lie. I have actually danced a celebratory jig around my desk on the odd occasion, but that’s another blog!)
Mostly, my natural reaction has always been a human one I suppose. “What possible reason would they have to do that?” or “What’s wrong with them?” or even, “She must be leaving for money. The fool!”
But I grew wiser as the years rolled by.
Mostly,…

Today we’re kicking off a mini blog series we’d like to call, “Show Me The Money”. This three part series will cover everyone’s favorite topic — money, of course. Most importantly, each part will provide tips for how recruiters can save money and increase performance. Let’s get started!
In every corporate recruiting environment, there’s a consistent discussion around how to lower hiring cost, specifically agency spending. While utilizing recruiting agencies can…

They're in your sights and now it's time to reel 'em in.
There is no better feeling for a recruiter than finding that perfect candidate (except maybe when they accept an offer). But sometimes that perfect person is working in some other office. How to get them to notice you?…

You win, universe. I quit. I hereby resign as career coach helping the wayward un/under-employed. You know I feel a responsibility – a moral obligation, even – to help job seekers. I don’t mean candidates for my company – I mean job seekers who can do no more for me than say thank you. I just think it’s the right thing to do – to offer help and career guidance when and where I can. I've reviewed hundreds of resumes, mock interviewed candidates, edited LinkedIn profiles, made intros…
