Why Singapore? Taxes, taxes, taxes!

Globalization’s effects can be felt everywhere. Gone are the days where people needed to hop on planes to attended business meetings, and gone are the days where managers needed to be physically present to manage their teams. Today companies can move their doors to foreign and more profitable places where labor is cheaper, taxes are lower, and property has more value.

We at HireLabs have become big fans of Singapore, which is on its way to becoming the epicenter of the technological… Continue

Zombies and Recruiting

It's strange how a song you've heard thousands of times before, suddenly brings a meaning to you. I was peacefully sitting in my car today, kids at home, doing some errands in my own space and this song from The Zombies comes on the radio, "Shes not there". This song is 33 years old, I was 3 when it came out... and today it decided to speak to me.

Maybe this is the theme song for all those Recruitment Managers out there, who have a team doing hiring for them,… Continue

Recruiters With Better Things To Do...Than Visit Clients!

With all the pressures facing the recruitment industry at the moment, from the reduced levels of hiring over the last couple of years to skill shortages and the increased threat of direct sourcing posed by social recruiting, you would have thought that any recruiter worth their salt would be doing everything they could to maximise every opportunity.

Which is what makes this story so baffling...

Couple of weeks ago a client invited me in for a briefing. I wasn’t the only… Continue

How many horses should be pulling that résumé cart?

I'd suggest at least two. You've got your Plough Horse (the scanable, aesthetically-bland format for an applicant database), and you have your Show Pony (the one you parade in an interview that just looks dazzling and makes you feel good). I'm talking about formats or structures here, so as not to be confused with different versions…

Henry…. You Have to NETWORK!

I can picture him now. Hunched over his laptop, furiously typing, re-entering the same information over and over again. Name, location, desired salary range, citizenship status, upload resume, click here, yes include a cover letter, and…. Done! Last resume sent for the day and his work is done. Now he can relax. He is the “Job Hunter” and for this blog I will refer to him as Job Hunter Henry – JHH. JHH thinks to himself “I hope this round of resume sendoffs yields some interviews and eventually… Continue

25,000 members on RecruitingBlogs.com

I remember when RecruitingBlogs.com hit a thousand members. That was a lot. I remember being at a Kennedy show in Las Vegas and there were 30 members on RecruitingBlogs.com and there was a lot of activity. I remember when there were 300 members on RecruitingBlogs.com and the lawyer's letter arrived with a cease and desist from Jobster.

This week we passed the 25,000 member mark and I am proud of that. I want to thank everyone who has taken time, even the smallest amount of time to… Continue

help, please! What would you do?

I have been recruiting a long time, and I have seen more than I care to of the eccentricities of the human nature over the past 14 years. Every once in a while, I am stumped. I contacted this developer about a position with a company in the radio industry, and this is the response I got.

How would you respond?…

The future is agnostic

I had the privilege to moderate a panel discussion on disruptive technologies and innovation at the recent iMedia

Agency Summit
in Brighton and it struck me – not only from the panel discussion, but also from the other excellent speakers and from my own preparation – that we are currently stuck in a channel approach. The

emergence of social media and…

Hiring? - Here are the TOP 5 things you NEED to Know.

I have written a lot about how hiring practices affect the size of your current and future candidate pools and thought that this might be a good time to talk about what you CAN do NOW to increase or maintain your current candidate pool.

I have read a lot of articles from other experts in the field and though they have not conducted the extensive surveys that we have, we all seem to share a common opinion; treat all applicants and future employees with respect and meet their… Continue

HRzone highlights: this week in HR (21/05/10)

It’s been another busy week on HRzone. We are getting used to the Liberal Conservative coalition, although some still have their suspicions, and leadership and life must go on, so what better week to address some employment law issues?

Layla Bunni was on the case this week of a bullying line manager asking what happens when sorry seem to be the easiest word – just because someone apologises, does it…

Advice for graduates.

It’s that time of year again, the sun’s beginning to shine, the sound of ice cream vans is filling the streets and I’ve started getting into planting herbs again!

Referrals- The Blind Dating of Recruiting

Blind dates.

We've all had them, right? You know, when you're in a slump in between relationships and you just can't seem to meet the "right" person. Suddenly, your mom, sister, or friend knows of someone who "would be perfect for you". You mind begins racing with images of the worst possible people to be paired up with. Resume SEO: How to Pump Up the Keywords Without Turning Off Recruiters

How do you pump up the volume of keywords in your resume and still make it readable? The secret is to insert keywords in ways that improve readability without making your resume invisible to search engines. If you insert keywords in the right places it helps both recruiters and search engines read your resume.

What is Resume SEO? Recruiters use keyword searches to mine for resumes in job boards and resume databases. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for resumes means… Continue
