What’s wrong with recruitment…and how to fix it!

What’s wrong with recruitment…and how to fix it!

This could potentially be a VERY long post because I’m talking about an industry that has many inherent flaws. In my opinion, many of the problems we see stem from some fundamental issues that recruiters have wrought upon themselves and customers…

Boost Your Billings

Two years ago I was watching a documentary on PBS about monkeys who lived by a river. When they showed how a monkey went about foraging for his food, I felt as if I was watching a big billing recruiter work his magic.

The monkey was looking for insects underneath river rocks. He would pick up a rock, look at it, and put it back if there was no insect. Then another rock. And another. After about a dozen rocks without a juicy insect underneath, he finally found one. He quickly picked at…

A Lesson in Recruitment Messaging from the band Galactic

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of traveling down to New Orleans for this year’s Jazz Fest.  It was my first time down on the Bayou and it exceeded even my loftiest expectations.  The people were friendly and food was excellent but most importantly the music was downright incredible.  The best of which was a concert I saw at the famous Tipitinas by a band named Galactic (which was probably the best concert I’ve ever been to.)  I’ve…

Rude Linkedin Introductions, you just sent one!

Illin' Linkedin Introductions

In the last few weeks, I feel like I suddenly got popular with all the Linkedin Introductions I have received.  Not in the “hot girl at the dance” kind of way and not in the "our company just got a billion dollar valuation" way.  Either my name is on wall in a bathroom stall or my Linkedin account hit a tipping point and…

Is Recruiting Becoming an Unhealthy Profession?

If you took a photograph of the recruiting Industry, it would look like most people you'd see on the streets every day!

Instead of making it better, technology has bloated the recruitment process.  Its a process that now lumber around in HR departments all across corporate America—where the objective of hiring the best talent has been replaced by fast, cheap…

Closing the Loop in your Candidate Experience

candidate experience, it’s important to note the breadth of the interactions that you have with candidates in your recruiting process.  Once you understand where you interact with candidates, you will be able to improve your process to make sure these interactions are leaving candidates with a better experience.

The golden rule of cold-calling. Don’t

Almost all recruiters are told they must cold-call to build a client-base.

Sadly, that is mostly bad advice.

Certainly it is true that all recruiters need to develop clients, identify prospects and find ways to build sustainable relationships. And often that means connecting with people you have never dealt with before. So yes, we are business developers, and in a tight market that becomes even more critical.

But, if at all possible, don’t cold…

Write a résumé recruiters and employers will want to read; not one they dread

Here’s a fact: Very few people like reading résumés, especially those who read hundreds of them a week. Ask any recruiter. I critique and write résumés as part of my job. I’ve read hundreds of them and have conducted numerous critique sessions, but I've got nothing over recruiters.

The only bright spot in this whole process is reading a résumé that doesn’t give me a…

Social Media, Recruitment, Seriously, it ain’t that new!

I find it interesting, this world we live in.  I'm probably too entrenched in this Social Media, Recruiting space.  I get genuinely surprised when people either a) discover Social Media b) discover how to use it within Recruitment.  When people rock up at these conferences and are all starry eyed and "Wow'ed" at what they are discovering.  I know it is pretty cool stuff,…

Career advice from a toddler

I have had great mentors and teachers, who have taught me invaluable business and life lessons. However, the one who has taught me the most in the least amount of time has been my three year old. A mother is often a child’s first teacher, but on this mother’s day, I want to recognize the career lessons I received from my precious toddler.

  1. Thinking outside the “toy box”: Have you ever seen a toddler play with a puzzle or a toy or a game that you just got out of…

Recruiters… If Greece was a company it would be in receivership…

I consider myself to be extremely lucky.  I have had a long career as a recruitment consultant, manager and - most recently - company owner.  I am now in a unique position where I talk to recruitment people all day long… Don’t feel sorry for me – I kind of like it.  Some people like listening to East 17 cd’s… me?...  I like talking to recruitment people… and… listening to East 17 cd’s… sometimes at the same time…

Point is that quite often in our industry there is…
