Who is hiding all of the jobs?

We’ve all seen the same statistic that approximately 80% of jobs are unadvertised. Some refer to this as the hidden job market.  Alternatively, we’ve also seen the statistic that approximately 80% of employers advertise job opportunities online either through their own website, a mainstream job board or a niche industry site. So, while those two statistics refer to separate measurements, they are somewhat intertwined and intriguing.

I frequently encounter content directed at…

Searching Google Plus

In research for a webinar I ran last week Google Plus for Recruiters, I found that there are not too many useful tools to help recruiters source candidates on Google Plus. The big problem with the search within Google Plus is that there is no good way to limit your search to a specific geographic area. It would appear that the most effective way is not to use the search in Google Plus but use a Google X-Ray search. Glen…

Even Small Recruiting Firms Could Have Obamacare Responsibilities

Think you don't have to worry about healthcare reform because you don't have 50 or more employees? Think again!

Most of the hype about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the healthcare reform law better known as Obamacare, has been surrounding the employer mandate. Employers with 50 or more…

No excuses, the best candidate wins.

We work in a ridiculously simple industry, we find great people. Although it's complex in execution, the simplicity of it is astonishing. We tend to forget that over time, when the candidates are hard to find or the jobs dry up, we externalize and rationalize our lack of success. In nearly every market there is a shortage of "great" candidates, and it's up to us to find them!

Next time you wonder why the client doesn't call you back after you take a role and present the "perfect"… Continue

10 Ways to Recognize An Unfillable Requisition

The empty chair.  The "no hire".  Let me tell you, it happens.  There are some positions that are just not going to get filled.  You can argue with me until you are blue in the face, but it is the honest truth. I wish it weren't true, but it is a cold hard fact.

How can you identify an unfillable requisition?  As a recruiter, what are the signs of a…

Star Trek taught me how to be a better Recruiter…

Traits you can learn from Star Trek that can help you become a better recruiter and “Live Long and Prosper”:

  1. James T. Kirk – Go with your gut.   Use your experiences and gut feelings.
  2. Spock – Make the Logical Decision.   Most of the time the logical decision is the right decision.
  3. Dr. McCoy (Bones) – I’m a Recruiter not a miracle worker.
  4. Montgomery Scott (Scotty) – Know how the Recruiting engine works and how all of its components run…

Why Did My Potential Client Disappear?

Hi everyone! So, I just started a new job in April with a GREAT firm. I am now responsible for working both sides of the desk. This is my first experience with client development, so I wanted some helpful tips. I met a director of HR for a local company at a professional networking event. She told me she was looking for a corporate recruiter that has experience specific to the industry she works in. Within a day, I found her an AMAZING candidate (name blocked out of course because at that…

What lies beyond the search box? Maybe better solutions....

Last week Jakub Zavrel posted a fascinating piece on ERE.net asking the eternal question: Are Job Boards Still Relevant for the Future of Recruiting?  I strongly encourage you to read it (and definitely check out the comments – Steven Rothberg has some pertinent thoughts, too!).

In a nutshell, Zavrel…

Deciding to relocate to Dubai

With the country having gone into recession, many people are taking the decision to relocate elsewhere. After several miserable, almost non-existent summers, warmer climates are looking more appealing than ever to potential emigrates. With a strong economy and beautiful weather, Dubai is a popular destination to move to.

Why…

Getting it all done - the world's best time management tip

I’ve just re-read Richard Denny’s fantastic book ‘Selling to Win’, in which he mentions a time management technique that I learnt many, many years ago from an old boss of mine.

Unbeknown to me, as I have been teaching this technique to people over the years myself it was actually first taught to Charles M Schwab of Bethlehem Steel by a training expert called Ivy…

Recruitment Envy?

What makes a recruiter switch firms? I mean really is it just about the possibility of earning more with another firm? Or do all recruiters want to manage large teams and then regions running a big firm?

Some of the most successful recruiters I know have stayed within a firm or started their own firm and really locked down their niche market.

So my…

Social Recruitment through Pictures

A picture is worth a thousand words. Cliché? Yes. True? Absolutely! Especially in terms of social media, people have so much to look at and take in (the average Facebook visit is 20 minutes), that pictures stand out and make the biggest impact because visuals are a little easier to process. For example, you can tell people how awesome your office is, but it's so much more powerful to show them your…

There are many people who do not believe in hiring an external recruiter to get talented professionals. This is because they are no aware of the benefits that they can attain from doing so. To Sell or Not to Sell…That is NOT the Question

“Yoga is almost like music in a way; there’s no end to it.” — Sting

Selling, like yoga, is almost like music as there is never an end to it, if it’s being done right. Yet, so many salespeople engage in a stop-start mentality in their sales practice. They start selling, land a few good prospects or customers, try to leverage them for all they are worth, then find themselves back at the beginning of having to start selling again. It’s little wonder that so many salespeople are not…

The Psychology of Cold Calling

image from recruitinganimal.typepad.com I just published a short ebook on Amazon. It sells for $2.99.

It's called The Psychology of Job Hunting but it's really about the fear of cold calling and networking.

It's focus is self-image and boundary issues. That doesn't sound interesting but I tried to make it very colloquial and enjoyable to read.

I've…

Why I started my Recruiting Business

Hello All,

This is my first blog here, so I thought I would start by sharing my experience on why I started-up my own Recruiting  Firm about 3 yrs ago. The story really begins when I left the Army for college, I never dreamed that I would own a Recruiting and Staffing Firm. Hell, I didn't even know how the business worked, let alone had any interest in…

How to Identify The Strategic Candidate

The elevation of the human resources function to business partner status has increased the demand for people skilled at identifying gaps and delivering impactful human capital solutions. The days of the personnel people police compliance only HR professional are waning as Boards of Directors and Owners in businesses of all types continue to recognize that the people working within the enterprise can make or break you.
