Checking Out Candidates on Facebook !!!

If I had to give one piece of advice to a just-out-of-college job-seeker, it would be this: manage your social media presence wisely. Because experienced staffing professionals – i.e. the ones who have the tools to screen your résumé – know how to use social media to find what they want. And more and more, they like using social media.

I’ve written a lot about LinkedIn…

Doing More by Working Less

Ages ago, when I was in Architectural school, modernism ruled the day, and most students embraced the motto “Less Is More” (Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe).  This aesthetic of minimalism had a foundational philosophy of simplicity – don’t surround people with too much complexity (in design) and they will be more in…

Resumes with No Address

I answered the following question on LinkedIn today, and thought I’d publish my thoughts on whether a home address is on resumes.

Q:  There is a growing concern among employment candidates with putting their home addresses on their resumes. Would you consider a candidate who sent you a resume with only a phone number or email contact?

A:  One…

"Does my butt look big in this?"

What do you say to a friend who wants your ‘real’ opinion on a matter of some sensitivity? You know, “Do you think I should marry him?” or showing off a new pair of jeans, “Does my butt look big in this?”

It’s a tricky dilemma. You don’t want to rock the boat. You certainly don’t want to hurt your friends’ feelings.  But on the other hand, being honest, while painful, is almost certainly in their best interests.

To answer these questions well, it takes courage. It takes…

Following up after the Job Interview

The final stage of nailing the interview is the follow up. After doing all the hard work of preparing for the interview, dressing correctly and being able to answer all the questions which the interviewer asks, the final stage is to follow up from the interview.

Find below a list of the best follow up tactics to use to continue to show your enthusiasm for the role.

Follow up with a letter or email thanking the interviewer for their time and re-expressing your…

Recruiters- Good VS Evil

You are looking for a job, your resume is posted on several job boards and you have a LinkedIn profile among others as well. It’s chum for recruiter infested waters! So, how do you choose between a good headhunter and a bad headhunter, and what should you know about the internal recruiters at companies you are targeting?

Let’s start with headhunters (they hate this name by the way). Many headhunters out there are bottom feeders that are scouring the internet for resumes that can…

Unemployed need not apply..Really…Really!!

Unemployed need not apply..Really…Really!!

You read it right, there are actually companies out there who are putting up signs or including in

their job descriptions that the “unemployed need not apply”.

How pathetic, how disgusting, how wrong. The bad part is because the unemployed are not a

Protective class, there is nothing that can be done about it. Now of course if the company must

Comply…

The Two Best Interview Questions You Should Ask

I’ll say up front that the subject matter of this post is a bit unreal. Great interviewing can’t be boiled down to a list of questions. It’s a combination of helping a candidate feel at ease, listening, observing, talking and, yes, asking the right questions. And what a recruiter or potential employer does (or asks) in any given interview depends,…

Can Background Checking Screen for Attitude?

I just got back from a long flight. It was your typical business trip. Head to the airport – jump on a plane (after suffering the crush of too many people trying to avoid “Bag Check”), get off the plane, rent the car, find the hotel, sleep poorly, get up early to work out (this for maintaining sanity) then spend the day working with a client. Then off to the airport (30 minutes later than you intended to leave, which puts you in a heated rush) and do all the same in reverse. When I get on that… Continue

Nursing Shortage Continues - Demand for RNs up 53% in 2011

Employers and staffing agencies posted over 121,000 new job ads for Registered Nurses in May, up 46% from May 2010. About 10% of that growth, or 12,700, were ads placed for positions at General and Surgical Hospitals, where annual turnover rates for RNs average 14% according to a recent KPMG survey. Year-over-year growth in hiring demand for hospitals is a strong 36%, but it should be…

How Many Corporate Recruiters Do We Need?

Recently, we have been spending a lot of time on the question “how many recruiters do we need in our corporate staffing function”? When corporate staffing budgets were decimated over the last three years, and have (very) slowly moved back up again as the economy has trickled upwards, there has been a renewed dialogue on this age-old question. We have at least three…

“Candidate Experience” question….

Next week I throw myself back into recruiting (this time, corporate – something new!).  I’ve been thinking a lot about how I’m going to handle the candidate experience.  Surely some things are out of my control – I will be working with a recruiting coordinator, flexing to the needs and schedules of my hiring managers, and of course the whims of the candidates themselves.  (Of course I want to work for your company.  Unless this other offer comes through.  I can interview anytime.  Except…

Living up or down to your reputation?

I was listening to a Wayne Dyer CD again. I like listening on the way to work because it distracts me from the long commute and it helps me focus on the important things in life. My take away from my last drive was the concept of reputation. He said something very simple and yet so true. He said that our reputation is not with us, it is with other people. Many of us spend a lot… Continue

LinkedIn IPO - Good News for Staffing Industry

LinkedIn’s IPO a few weeks ago was a defining moment in staffing. I took it as a sign that we had reached an official turning point in the struggle to jump-start the economy. Yes, I know, we aren’t there yet – some people say unemployment hasn’t recovered quite yet at 9.1%. Although,…

Ask not what social networking can do for you...

…but rather what you can do with Social Networking...

Very simple and straight forward isn’t it?

A lot of time as a sourcer OR a recruiter, you wonder how best any specific tool or website can help you. I think it is about your approach and mindset as a sourcer that decides the outcome. Many times we…

Cold Calling: A Junior Sales Activity?

Cold Calling: a junior sales activity? A topic of discussion in many an interview I've had with senior sales professionals is 'lead generation' and 'cold calling' and their willingness to pick up the phone to generate a new business opportunity. Many well established career sales people I've met feel as though they have moved…

As an Executive Recruiter and a Sr. Consultant charged with training internal recruiting groups on how to effectively grow teams to peak performance through recruitment and succession, I must track the trends of what key characteristics and skill sets employers look for.

Over the last 5 years, some of the buzz words that I’ve seen come and go…
