Tumblr Recruitment is Knocking. Again.

Although it might not be the keystone of your social recruitment strategy, it undoubtedly helps proliferate your company’s name to job candidates out there. Meet Tumblr– my favorite social networking platform, by far. Many see it as a college hipster blogging site, or a volcano of useless, sarcastic internet memes. But those people are clearly missing two vital…

Strings, Strings and more Strings!!

Strings, Strings and more Strings!!

So as most of you know I blogged about 25+ posts of search strings. However 1 thing has been made clear to me. Some people did not read the initial post.

What I posted were what is called uber strings. An uber string, like an uber resume, is a long string that encompasses most of all the possible permutations you could use to search for. This then allows you…

How is job-hopping really viewed by recruiters and hiring managers?

Candidates often ask me whether changing roles/companies too frequently over their respective careers will have an impact on their ability to land jobs in the future. It is an interesting question, particularly in light of just how much perceptions have changed on this issue over the last few years.

The short answer is that every position is unique…

Hiring Challenges – a BOB Infographic

Hiring managers are frustrated. There are more applicants than ever for each position, and it is harder than ever to separate excellence from mediocrity – everyone looks good on paper!   Active and so-called “passive” job seekers continue to pursue alternatives to their current positions, figuring the grass MUST be greener on some other side of the street.  Most employment turnover is caused by bad hiring decisions.  Getting a solid replacement at the executive level can take 18 months…

Why We Hate Headhunters

If you are in the recruiting Industry and someone asked you what the role of a headhunter was, how would you explain it?

Ask anyone at random what a headhunter was, and they’ll probably say something like “aren’t they the ones who steal people?

Ask  highly trained executives, and they will say something like “aren’t they the pushy types that call you out of the blue trying to get you to leave your job for some other job they’re pushing-so they can make a killing?

Ask…

Just Hire Good People And Train Them.....Unless

There is a lot of talk these days about how companies should just hire good people and train them. After all, we have high unemployment still, and this would be the right thing to do for the greater good, right?

Sure, unless….Unless the best thing for your business or your division is not to just hire and train, but instead to find the person with the skills you need. What’s best for the greater good is for more companies to do better and to grow and get stronger. Many times that… Continue

Is Losing A Job At RIM Really The End Of The World?

Like most tech-savvy Canadians, I've been following the ongoing saga of RIM. The difference is that Martyn Bassett Associates has a bit of history with the company - we placed several candidates there back in the early days - and have a vested interest in the Waterloo tech talent-pool. With that in mind, the news that RIM is going to trim at least 2000 positions got me…

Bad Jobs Report

69,000 new jobs added in May really is a pathetic number.  This is not great news for those of us in recruiting, but not for the reasons most people see it as a bad report.

The long-term unemployed problem in this country continues and it’s going to continue for a long time.  It’s a serious societal issue and it does affect us all.  However, we have seen recruiting conditions improve quite a bit with the increased profitability of companies coming off of The Great Recession.  Profits…

How Come Recruiter's Never Call Me Back? CAUTION: SPOILER ALERT - IT'S YOU!

What Recruiters Are Looking For When They Contact You

Most successful recruiters do not waste a lot time with anyone who is not a fit for their clients. You were called (or emailed) initially for a very specific reason, either:

1.  You have the skills or experience required for a job

2.  You work for a client competitor

3.  Someone gave your name as a reference, or

4.  Your LinkedIn profile insinuates that you may be a good…

"The customer is always right", modernly.

We've all heard that adage, "The customer is always right".  Growing up, I didn't put much thought into it.  Of course the customer is always right, I'm the customer paying my hard earned money for a product or service so I should get whatever I want duh!  As I grew older, I learned what that really meant.  Think about who is making this statement.  It's the vendor, the business owner, the proprietor telling his customer "The customer is always right" or maybe his employee "The customer is…
