Career Maintenance

Over the weekend, I vacuumed two flights of stairs, cleaned the bathrooms and washed the kitchen floor. I also sat down with my copy of Home Maintenance for Dummies and tried to figure out why my toilet sweats more than a marathon runner. Suggestions would still be appreciated.

As I completed my checklist, I wondered if anyone has ever applied the idea of home…

TMI? If in doubt, leave it out! Making social media work for you

• “OMG! I got so wasted last night!!”

• “Blacking out is no fun! How did I get home?”

• “I can’t believe I slept in a field AND lost my shoes?”

• “How did I end up in Hoboken?”

• “Have to go to court today – stupid speeding tickets!!”

• “I hate my boss – I can’t believe what an idiot I work for!”

• “This job is SO NOT worth $25 per hour!!”

Candidate Response, Company Brand and Your ATS

Working your way past the locked door, to the room of the interview

I am sure that many of us have had our share of interviews. Gone through the process of entering in data and resume information into a company applicant tracking system for a position. For those of us who may be a little more savvy, we may have built our relationships, made contact with our influential contacts, networked and sweet-talked our way into an interview.

Whichever way you chose… Continue

Last Recruiter Standing 2010

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the DFWTRN and everyone at the Last Recruiter Standing 2010 luncheon yesterday who voted for my story! (Yes, it really is a true story, I have witnesses.) There were so many great recruiting stories; funny, embarrassing, and almost unbelievable. This just confirms that… Continue

A Training Extravanganza for Recruiters Using Twitter

While Jerry Albright was making plans to leave Twitter forever, I was chalking up a plan to get a dozen other people on, active and excited about Twitter.

Catching Fireflies

Every year my family and I try and plan a vacation that will be an adventure of some sort. This year we headed out on a cross-country trek from our home near Dallas, TX through Virginia, Washington DC, North Carolina, Tennessee,…

Celebrating Your Career Independence

Like most of you, I spent this past weekend relaxing, catching up on some long-neglected chores and between periods of light showers and heavy rain, enjoying some traditional July 4th fare, hotdogs, apple pie and lemonade.

I did give some thought about the reason for our celebration. I think many of us,…

4 Ways to Win a Job Placement with an Unconventional Job Candidate

It’s no challenge to place a “great candidate” – you know the typ: the right education, the right career history, cookie cutter objective, perfect fit. But what about a “great candidate” who doesn’t tick the conventional boxes but you know could deliver on the job?

The biggest leap story we heard was from a nationwide recruiter who said one of her most satisfying placements was rebranding a vicar as a sales executive. He successfully made the transition and was able to use his… Continue

Recruiting Your Recruiter Washington Post Article

It doesn't happen often, but every now and then you are made aware of an article that you just know will become a new and critical tool in your search best practices toolbox (thank you, now forgotten LinkedIn contact who first made me aware of this gem).

With fireworks and the good times of Independence Day fading in the rear view mirror, it’s time to gear up for the busy summer ahead in recruiting. The interesting part of this summer will be the unique challenges employers face building a plan for recruiting during the rest of 2010 while thinking strategically about recruiting in 2011.

Should you be optimistic? Should you be conservative?

Whether you are bullish or bearish on the future, the growing competition for talent… Continue

Why are you wasting your time with reference checking?

The poor cousin of the recruitment process is the obligatory reference check. Too often it is nothing more than a perfunctory procedure to conclude an exhausting number of interviews.

Most reference checks are the outcome of a telephone conversation, as most recruiters will attach little weight to any written references. Many companies have policies prohibiting managers from providing written references,…

Finding MY place

From our first day on this earth we're working and learning about finding our place where we feel comfortable, most ourselves. While I feel comfortable in my own skin, I'm facing a new and old kind of advisory which I thought I had left behind.

While I'm a shrewd competitor, I'm also one who is a very social and positive person. No, I'm far from Pollyanna, but I do always… Continue

S.U.R.V.I.V.A.L. of the fittest.

Over the past decade we’ve seen boom and bust, feast and famine in the recruiting industry. The good news is that this cycle tends to cull the flock. The strong survive. The weak don’t.…

Mobile HR v Mobile Recruitment

There is currently a lot of “talk/noise” about mobile recruiting and in my humble opinion it will be huge, more of that later but for me it is not just about recruiting….mobile has the ability to aid many areas of HR. Why? I hear a cry, well here is my take;

  • Mobile is NOT a technology but a channel.
  • Mobile is about personal one 2 one ENGAGEMENT.
  • Mobile is about PUSH and PULL…

Social Media Bites Back

Five years on using social media: have recruitment agencies learnt to interact?

We have all seen the power that social media has. Most recruiters, whether a recruitment agency, HR department or a hiring line manager will use sites like LinkedIn to identify candidates and, more often than not, Facebook and Google to vett them. However, they do not always contribute to this online community. This one sided approach to social…
