Be The First To Make A Job Offer

The technical recruiting world in the last few months has been eye opening. The truth is that the current job market, at least in technology, is as competitive as ever.  If you haven’t hired this year yet you need to read this article because things have drastically changed.

Across the country, different markets typically have very different market trends for a similar type of skill set. As an example, it might be much easier to find a C++ embedded candidate in San Jose than it would…

The Massachusetts CORI Reform Law Exemplifies the Reviews Required for Background Checks

A good article from Elaine Varelas of  the Job Doc in the Boston Globe or Boston.com as it is known.  A job applicant wrote her asking, basically, if an open container misdemeanor from 2008 would nullify his employment candidacy.   Not  necessarily the crime of the century, but an open container is a serious enough offense as it implies possible intoxication that can lead to serious traffic…

Quick thoughts on using Google+ for recruiting and networking

Ok, so we all know that Google+ is the hottest thing in social media right now.  Everyone have an account already?? (I have a few if you need one)

I’ve been playing with it for a while now and I have to admit, as a recruiting tool there is a lot of potential here.  To me, the problem with social recruit is and continues to be that…

Social Media search is not just about screening out—it’s also about screening in

A common misconception is that social media searches are only used to find negative information for screening out candidates. However, businesses using social media searches recognize these searches can be very beneficial in verifying positive affiliations, associations and activities. For example, a social media search can identify if the candidate is active in…

Staffing Agencies = Training Ground for Corporate Recruiters?

I never thought I’d be a corporate recruiter.  Well, if we go back far enough I never thought I’d be a recruiter.  In fact, I don’t know a single recruiter who set out to BE a recruiter, on purpose.  We all seemed to kind of fall into it, but I digress.

I started out as many do, in an agency.  Actually my first experience with an agency was covering the front desk at a recruiting firm that rhymes with Blobert Blaf.  I remember the staffing managers literally…

Violinist in the Subway – Can we Recognize Talent?

Perhaps you have heard the story:  Internationally acclaimed concert violinist Joshua Bell once agreed to don street clothes and play his $3.5 million dollar Stradivarius violin in a Washington DC subway station, as a social experiment, sponsored by the Washington Post.…

Stop Job Search Failure Before it Starts

Experiencing failure can be one of the most difficult parts of a job search for candidates and recruiters alike.  For candidates, finding out that you were turned away from a job because you do not fit the job description or company culture can be very discouraging.  For recruiters, whose job it is to find the right match between candidates and hiring companies, failure can be also be extremely disappointing when all of your hard work results in letting your client and candidate…

Give those recruiters a red card, ref..

Anyone can tell you that a bad experience tends to unfortunately stick out in your head more so than a good experience. It can just take one person to really upset a company brand but a whole group of people can do some serious damage and in this case, it most certainly has.

The following tale is by no means tarring the bunch of wonderful recruiters that are out…

In Pursuit of Happiness (#SHRM11 Learnings pt. 2)

"It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere." -- Agnes Repplier

Am I a culture fit for this company?  Do my values and beliefs align with those of the organization?  These are two questions that many job seekers, employers, and employees are asking themselves these days.  Culture is the… Continue

The good, the bad and the ugly...

I have recently had the pleasure of managing a large volume recruitment project, and utilised partnerships with other agencies.  It ocurred to me to actually learn something from my range of experiences, from "Oh yay its her again - she's a fab recruiter" to "please, please, please don't let that be X on the phone!"

These are my perceptions of what not to do and what TO do!

Step 1 of your digital social recruiting program

I was recently revisiting some learning & development material I pulled together last year on the topic of Communication. Because of the enormity of this subject I made the decision at the time to break it down into two sessions. The first was the art of “Receiving” (a.k.a listening) the premise was that contrary to popular belief, the actual key ingredient to being a master communicator is the ability to listen and give 100% attention to others. Not, as many believe, the ability to…

Technical testing when and how to do it!!!

Technical testing when and how to do it!!!

Within the staffing community, Hiring teams (HT, (this consists of Hiring manager, and possible first and second level interviewers) and businesses themselves there has always been controversy over how do you determine the expertise level of a candidate. Interviews, technical testing, reference checks, and more are all tools that can be used. Some staffing professionals (SP), and companies…

Tech Hiring Hits a 4-Year High in June, Despite a Dismal BLS Report

Even with the increased concern and political rhetoric about flat jobs growth and unemployment in the US, it's no secret that IT professionals are in demand. IT hiring demand has been increasing rapidly throughout the 1st half of this year, up 56% percent since the beginning of the year. Employers and staffing agencies posted more than 251,500 new online job ads for IT professionals in June, up 1.7% from May.

DEFENCE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS

My favourite recruitment catch phrases

Recruitment lends itself as well to catchphrases as any other other industry. On my travels through the industry I have worked with some very creative individuals who have a beautiful knack of summing up a situation or person with a few well chosen words. I have also worked with others that have developed what seems like an entirely different language and make little sense unless you have the appropriate translation phrase book.

Regardless, what I have found is that a good…

Including Key Achievements in your Resume

If I had a dollar for every resume I saw that did not include “key achievements”, I would be a very wealthy resume writer!

Failing to include key achievements throughout your resume is a recipe for disaster and will cause your resume to be put straight in the deleted folder and never to be seen again.

The job market is competitive, and if you’re going to prove to the hiring manager that you are the…
