Judging A Job By Its Title

Your job title says a lot about you, whether you want it to or not. It's shorthand for what you do and where you fit into an organization. It's also inherently meaningless, since no two companies are identical and nobody has to sign an affidavit before they declare themselves the Vice President of something. There's no solution to this (and I'm not sure it's a problem, per se) short of standardizing job titles across the board, but it did get me thinking about the two fundamental components…

Why Proven Skills are Paramount to Paper Champs

A little less than a year ago, some college friends and I founded MindSumo, an online recruiting tool that lets companies post challenges for college students to solve.  Thus, it is no surprise that I have a strong preference for hiring based on measurable performance, instead of solely relying on things like resumes and interviews when making hiring decisions.…

How to get the most out of your recruitment technology

Here’s a scenario that happens way too often.  A company buys a brand-new shiny piece of software that they are really excited about all the functionality and think will have a great impact on their organization.  They implement it with their providers help and then a few months later it’s sitting their available but most of the product goes unused.

Does this sound familiar?  No matter if you are large or small this has probably happened at a company you’ve worked for and may be…

A Pocketful of Invisible Nose Magnets

(Reposted from Make HR Happen July 11, 2012)

I should be ashamed of myself. My kids actually believed that I had a pocketful of invisible nose magnets. Every time, without fail, when I would put my hand into my pocket and then extend my hand with the thumb and two…

How webservices can be your secret weapon in the war against inefficiency

The first week of July has seen a continuation of the UK’s monsoon season, as well as the release of the first in idibu’s new Native360 Series. A series of next-gen integrations designed using only webservices; the Native360 has been launched with the plug-in to the RDB ProNet system.

Well now, you may say, freak weather I’m happy to discuss, but why should I care about webservices and next-generation integrations? It’s a good question, and the…

Not Gonna Hire Because of a Criminal Past? Whoa, Let’s Re-Think That One

Yesterday, I received an email from a candidate that I placed one year ago with a long-standing client. This candidate, let’s call him Ray, phoned our office and he was transferred to me because of it’s “uniqueness” (I get all of the “unique” calls).

Anyway, back to Ray. He told me that he called every employment agency in town and has interviewed with a few but has…

The “Absolutes” and the “Superlatives” are coming to our pool party this weekend.

Ever notice that the more tired and frustrated you get the more likely you are to start speaking in superlatives and absolutes? I see this happen with increased intensity during an election year and I am sure it has NOTHING to do with the DRIVE BY media’s LEFT-LEANING manipulations!!!!

In the same way that superlatives and absolutes should be ignored when listening to someone trying to sell you on their position or product, you should refrain from…

Don’t forget to Sell the Candidate Hiring Manager!!

Don’t forget to Sell the Candidate Hiring Manager!!

Every candidate should leave “your Company” with a positive impression regardless of the outcome of the interview. All candidates have friends who will inevitably hear about positive or negative experiences while interviewing.

It is especially important to sell candidates whom we expect to offer.

Some reasons to sell “your Company” and your group:

  • Tough competition for talented…

Resume Writing Tips To Stand Out From The Competition

If you are a current job seeker you no doubt have one more thing to stress about – writing the perfect resume. The resume is often regarded as one of the most difficult documents to develop. Who’s Your Customer?

By Dan Ridge, Senior Contributing Consultant, Q4B

Ask any successful business leader who is their customer and you are likely to get a pretty detailed answer. Some could provide you with demographics and statistics on age, gender, education, income level and buying habits. Others might base their answer on type of product or service offered and their specific market’s competitive landscape. Still others could offer a price breakdown comparison within certain product or service…

Retail Recruiting: Sourcing Your Shoppers

You may not know it yet, but the people entering your stores, purchasing your products, and returning time and time again, may be the perfect candidates for your jobs. These people are your customers, and many retailers sometimes forget that their customers can be a valuable recruiting source. In fact, they may even be your best candidates because they are users of your products and services, which means they can best represent them to other customers, like themselves.

Here are 3…

The Future of Corporate Career Sites

The evolution of the Career Site has occurred rapidly over the last decade.  Career Sites are no longer (or should no longer) be static job pages linked together by a single homepage but really act as your recruiting hub for engaging and interfacing with candidates about your company and employment opportunities.

Candidates no longer just want a job search for open positions (although that’s a necessity) but they want to learn about your company and culture so they can make an…
