3 Signs It’s Time To Hire

Running a startup is all about small teams, long hours and wearing different hats. Doing more with less is a point of pride for a lot of CEOs, but there comes a time when you can’t afford to wait for VC money before expanding the team. After all, Microsoft may have started in a garage but it didn’t stay there for long.

So, what are some signs it’s time to bring someone else on board?…

How do I ensure my Career Site is seen by the best possible (ideal) candidates? - Keyword Strategy, that's how

Let's assume you have spent your money wisely and purchased a content management platform (like ours - sorry it needed to be said) that is technically compatible with the needs of Google and its peers in terms of page indexing.  Then the next thing you must get right is the linguistics you add to the site, that matches the linguistic styles of your ideal visitors.  You will have determined who these…

Strike 1 - You're Out!

This just happened.

We're recruiting for a C# developer (in Michigan).  We've had a few candidates interview and the process is moving along.  The first step in the interview process involves a WebEx meeting with the hiring manager just to get a bit of "who are we? - who are you?" in place.  Simple enough, right?

The starting point for that is an email from the manager to the candidate with the WebEx details - the link, password, etc.

So our…

5 Dos and Don'ts for Your Recruiting Software

As the new school year begins, parents buy children an exhausting list of supplies: the entirely-unnecessary  extravagance of a 120-pack of Crayola crayons, a couple (or 12) notebooks, 50 pencils…you get the point. The kids “need” all of these things. Then at the end of the school year, you discover you are left with 100 unused crayons in the box, 12 notebooks with the first 10 pages of each used, and…

Lessons from Popeye

“I yam what I yam and that’s all that I yam,” said Popeye in every episode of the iconic comic strip of the same name. It appeared that Popeye had healthy self-esteem and a clear image of who he was and his place in the world.

So, who are you? If you said CEO, business owner, Sr. Vice President, of another title-oriented label, you’re missing the point. You are so much more than your title or even your role at home. More importantly, who you are is not a static state that remains…

Is your Executive Candidate Experience killing your company brand?

The executive candidate experience needs special attention.  We may think that every candidate needs special attention, but the fact of the matter is, these candidates ARE different and can kill your recruiting brand.

Recruiting Game Changers

Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Bulls have won six world championships. Michael Phelps has been awarded more gold medals than any other Olympic athlete in the history of the Olympics. George Strait has more #1 singles than any other musical artist. All of these people have similar characteristics. The question is what are they? What does it take…

You never know where or when?

You never know where or when?

So I was on vacation celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary. We went to Las Vegas. While there I meant this person, from SF who was out of work interestingly enough. I was thinking, okay they are out of work but in Las Vegas. Not being by business I chose to just have a casual conversation. I had not told them what I do for a living. At some point the conversation went back to what they do for a living.

Turned out…

When is your Wedding Season?

The last few weeks have seen me smack dab in the middle of the wedding circuit.  I’m getting to that age where a number of friends and family members are starting to get engaged and married and there is no busier time than the last summer months (July & August).

It’s in these months that the churches and reception venues get most of their business and the ones that are the most hotly contested with all the couples vying for the best venues and deals.  Couples that really…

Its a jungle out there!!

I just completed my graduation a few months back. The things they teach you in books...well its almost never the same out here! You can never really understand the corporate world by reading the quotes and definitions in the text books or from the lectures a professor gives! Its a lesson best learnt firsthand !

A few years back was browsing for some interesting blogs and stumbled upon a story which changed my perception, my views and my style of viewing the…

Will Contingent Workers Lead Changes in Public Policy?

What if, as some experts predict, half of American workers were engaged on a contingent basis? How would the needs of our country, cities, and states change if a significant amount of people worked from home or outside the traditional 9-5 schedule?

Those are some of the questions Thomas Fisher, Dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, tackles in his article…

20 Things That Don’t Exist

I had noisy roadwork outside of my office this morning and somehow this made me think of this list. :) I am interested in what fellow recruiters would think about it.

  1. The Yahoo! Search engine
  2. Search tools that look through all the sources of data at the same time in a productive way
  3. Search strings to find the information that was not posted on the web
  4. Search strings that show only relevant results on Google
  5. Search strings that can be reused…

Candidate Experience - Why embracing your unsuccessful candidates could improve company performance...

Consider these two extracts from emails sent to ‘Clear Channel Communications’ Chief Talent Scout, Morgan Hoogvelt

“…I’ve been doing this for a while and I’ve never worked with anyone in an HR capacity who took the time to inform, support and strategize with a candidate the way that you guys did with me. It’s obvious that you all care about the candidate as much…
