When I first began my recruiting career I had an old school manager that explained to me how the job is really sales and that it is best to view your commodity as being people. I took it for what it was and went
on my way to begin building my desk. Sure there were a number of sales
techniques that I learned along the way. Some that worked, and others
that I need not mention again, but I never lost sight of that people
aspect. In fact I would often tell people that my…

The Hot Stove was fired up early this year with the new policy of Major League Baseball being anyone who was eligible automatically become a free agent upon the last pitch in the World Series. As a Cardinals Fan, this was a welcome change because it meant that I had an excuse to start paying attention again.…

If real estate has "location, location, location" then recruitment should certainly coin "timing, timing, timing" for our industry!
Once, I had a candidate in final stages with a client on a Friday. I was
buzzing about my weekend happy as a bee. Monday morning, I learn the hiring manager went to lunch over the weekend and bumped into someone that used to work for them at a different company, but they hadn't seen each other in 10 years. They got to talking about their current companies…

Yesterday Yahoo posted a great article on their home page, “10 Things the HR Department won’t tell you.” The article covers everything from getting an interview and passing its initial screening to staying off HR’s radar screen while employed. The author, Kimberly Fusaro, makes a lot of
great points. I…

I was finally happy to see that CareerBuilder is building something for recruiters and it's going to be expensive. I read about it on
ERE and essentially, Careerbuilder will build you a talent network. It seems they are the first to admit that it can be done without their help but of course if someone wants to help, why not. Help can be good.
I'm not going to describe what it is they…

Recently I attended a banquet and had the opportunity to meet and listen to
Commander Bill Driscoll present on "How to maximize your peak pressure performance." Commander Driscoll is a member of the Navy's first and only team of jet-missile aces with the shoot down of five enemy fighters in combat. He is one of the highest decorated living Naval Flight Officers of the past 50 years. His major awards include the Navy Cross, two Silver…

I wish I could find a lovely place to send job descriptions to die.
You know what I want instead? Job clouds.
Doesn't that sound lovely?
A job cloud is a lovely, puffy arrangement of projects and functions that need to be completed in order for a company to be successful. Job clouds can overlap across functional areas as the needs of the company change and the people in each cloud can change as their experience and education…

I like and agree with the post except the job board and ATS graveyard comment.
Everything in our (recruiters, sourcers, talent acqusition specialists, headhunter, whatever title you go by etc.) arsenal has it's place: university recruitment, job boards, ATS systems, etc.. As we globally compete to hire the "best of the best" (quote from the movie The Men in Black) for our customers, clients, etc. we need to look at the process like a doctor selecting the right prescription for…

Figuring out when to speak up in the workplace can be tricky: maybe you were asked about something controversial and were afraid to speak about it or maybe someone wanted constructive criticism and you chose to keep to yourself instead. Do you know what you would do in situations like these? People usually don’t speak up because of fear of risk and specifically, fear of offending those above them. Employees who are afraid to speak up and communicate ideas at work may miss out on amazing…

In a tight job market with people being laid off, it's easy for companies to adopt the attitude of "lay off now, rehire later". Cutting costs NOW trumps future planning and development. In fact, it turns out the lights on everything. But in the background, R & D groups at companies are developing really cool products that are going to save lives and enhance the quality of our lives.
These people aren't worried about their jobs -- but they are likely feeling super stressed at…
