Leaving "I" out of your interview is like leaving your name off of your resume!

Candidates have gotten so used to positioning themselves as good 'team' players that oftentimes, during an interview, they forget to include the all-important word 'I'.  "...so, tell me about your most recent project and describe for me some of the obstacles.  What was the scope, what were the deliverables and what was the actual vs. anticipated outcome?"  Questions like these are clearly geared toward learning about YOU and while it's important to convey that you're an…

It's no secret that the days of women being the sole caretakers of the children and men being the sole breadwinners are a thing of the past.  But according to a recent article by Human Resources Executive Online, many employers are failing to recognize that men need workplace flexibility just as much as their female counterparts.

According to the…

Politeness is alive and well........................

Like most recruiters I rely on email to flag to business leaders the existence of a great candidate. Before you say it or throw a brick bat, I also spend all day on the phone (well most of it anyway). Email is an essential business tool and it allows the transference of quality information such as briefs and CVs etc. that can be considered off-line by our clients.

Too many times, perhaps where the client has no need at the time for my candidate, emails go unanswered and I wonder…

Resume Submission: ur thoughts on ‘textese’?

In today’s world, people are moving. They are moving fast and they are moving with a purpose. Usually the purpose is to get to the next place that will get them moving even faster and with another purpose. With this new ‘on-the-go’ mentality, we somehow forgot the basics of professionalism. We somehow adopted the notion that sentences like, “Pls accept the attached resume for rvw, thx!” are acceptable. They’re not.

Take a moment to consider the amount of time you invest in…

Random job board spam - are you a culprit?

Every day I seem to get an email saying I am perfect for a Java or Oracle or other tech job because someone did a key word search on a job board and just messaged everyone. Sure they might toss in a statement to refer someone else if this is "not quite a fit" for me. What does this say to candidates that see your message? How validated do you feel? It makes me feel like the person sending the message has no concern what my background is and is just tossing things against the wall hoping…

How to get candidates into your Talent Network

I know I’ve been speaking a lot about Talent Communities on this blog lately but for this post I’m going to use a term I like better, which is Talent Network.  A Talent Network is a collection of candidates that your organization engages with from a recruiting perspective.  The engagement is bi-directional with the hope being that you not only engage with the individual but you are eventually able to engage with the individual’s network as well.  It is not a community in the sense of the…

Where are the Industrial Engineering Jobs?

Engineers – particularly Industrial Engineers – have been in high demand this year. However as the end of the calendar year approaches, hiring demand for most occupations decreases. Industrial Engineers have seen this slowing since the summer. In October, Recruiters placed a total of 15,900 new online job ads for Industrial Engineers in the US. This represents a decline of 23% since the 4-year high in May (when more than 20,000 jobs were advertised) and a year-over-year decline of 1.4%. In…

Some Serious Flaws in the Texas Statewide Criminal Records Search

Apparently, there are flaws in the Texas State Criminal Records System.  This is the state-wide criminal search put out by the Department of Public Safety.  As many investigators and employers use this both for research and employment screening, one would think these background checks would be accurate and up to date.   Not the case.

According to an article on KENS, Channel Five, in San Antonio, there are some alarming discrepancies in the criminal records.  One…
