2010....how to make it your personal best

Once a year and it is almost always at about this time, I begin to reflect on the year which is about to end, and the year that lies in front of us. It is truly a unique time when we are closing one chapter, and opening the next. For me, I wonder about how this year will stack up in the context of all the years in my life. Was it a win, a loss or a draw? Without question I begin every year with the best of intentions to improve my life and those around me by being a better husband, father,… Continue

2009 Wrap - Looking ahead to 2010

This will be my last post for 2009 – We are off to Montreal and Toronto for the Holidays. So I thought I would give you some thoughts, feeling and wishes for a year past and a year to come.

With 2009 coming to a close, it is time to take a brief moment to look back. It was a year that did not affect a few, had some impact on others and was very tough for most.

I am personally thankful for my loving wife and beautiful daughter who give me the reason to be better at home,… Continue

The Christmas recruitment debacle

"It's the most wonderful time of the year"....or so Andy Williams/Johnny Mathis (depending on your preference) would have you believe, but is it the "most wonderful time of the year" for the recruitment world? - this is a question I have been pondering with some interest this year.

In my experience, the topic of Christmas is ordinarily raised at some point during November at most recruitment companies, usually in the form of a manager or management team addressing the troops and… Continue

The new loyalty and the freelance employee

Loyalty is not what it used to be… and it shouldn’t be.

By Jose Ruiz

Translated from articule published in CNNExpansion.com on Dec. 6, 2009

A few weeks ago my grandfather, who was a top ranking executive in the banking industry back in the 80’s, asked me what I thought about the perceived lack of loyalty in today’s employees. He was surprised to see that now, the average time an employee spends working for… Continue

Have You Ever Heard A Manager Say: Shut Up and Get With The Program!

Shut up and get with the program 15th December 2009 written by Margo Rose

How many times have you heard that one? Well, that’s short hand for “welcome to your next training program,” the beatings will begin. For years, learning in the workplace was seen as punishment that had to be endured. But, then came the magic bullet that would cure all our ills: Learning Management Systems. Oh that was going to fix us alright, I used to hear supervisors whine, until they realized that this… Continue

India. Check. Final Thoughts

I went to India to check off one more country on my “bucket list” (not that I plan to kick the bucket anytime soon mind you but I’ve always had a long list of adventures to experience and this is one of the last countries on it).

My colleagues on this trip and I all recognized that the ten days we spent in 3 cities barely scratched the surface of India’s current business practices, culture and history. Ten years wouldn’t be sufficient, but we made the most of our moment and hope that… Continue

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

All stoked up about that job offer? The details in hand, now is decision time. Go down the list – job scope and title, your new colleagues, company stability and prestige, corner office, compensation and benefits, check that list and yep everything is in place so time to accept that offer. Now the hard part, telling your current boss who you know will be crest fallen because after all they love you in your current job but just aren’t paying you enough money. If only they had told you how… Continue

Twittersphere Christmas

Twas right before Christmas the twittersphere was a tizzy

Many recruiters and bloggers discussing how they were starting to get busy

You had recruiters texting how the upcoming new year brought hope

While the bloggers were writing that they think they can cope.

All around there was chatter and twits I could read

But there were a couple of people who seemed to be a different breed

See… Continue

You have been doing this for how long?

Yes… I guess you can call me the minority. How often to you come across a Recruiter who has worked in the Staffing Industry for almost 10 years… all while working in one organization. This is unheard of in any industry let alone staffing.

Sure it gets frustrating when an associate calls in sick 5 minutes after their shift began or after days of negotiating back and forth you finally convince your client that your candidate is worth an extra $5K, only to have your candidate accept a… Continue

What Version are You?

How often do you update your software? For instance, do you update every time there is a new release to take advantage of the latest in technology? Do you update your operating system to gain advantage as soon as it's released, OR do you wait? Like most people you probably upgrade your software every couple years due to a forced change.

I mean why change right? If it's working and current software you have gets you by why change? The time it would take to learn… Continue

Making Friends on Facebook vs Teams at Work

Friends Some of you whispered. Some of you spoke passionately. Some of you should be stuffing bills into this RecruiterGuy's cuss jar. But of the 22 responses (I was hoping for more) that were received via phone, email, and DM's as a result of my "Can I Just Whisper.." article, one…

Shopping, Gandhi and IIT Bombay

From the beginning of our trip through Monday night’s farewell dinner, our 19 SHRM delegates and guests had little time off – clocking 14 hours on occasion but, not all of it was taking meetings.

Sunday we were tourists (three of our days in India- counting our trip to the Taj, were devoted to tourist activities) and a few of us “shopped til we dropped” whenever we had a chance to do so.

(About the buying of India’s wares, I’m sworn to secrecy- with the holiday season upon… Continue

The year in job boards: 2009 – what we learned

It was an ugly, painful year. I haven’t talked to a single job board owner – not one – who saw revenue declines of less than 35 to 70 percent. Many had to lay off employees, cut benefits, or otherwise pull back. They weren’t alone, of course – almost every aspect of our economy (Goldman Sachs excepted) has suffered.

So, we’re agreed – 2009 sucked. But surely we learned a few things, right? Hmmm….

1. Bailouts are for banks, not job boards (unless you’re Monster in… Continue

Is the tide really ebbing away from the newspaper industry?

I'm a curious animal when it comes to newspapers. Having worked in my time for both national and regional titles, I never really got into the habit of buying a daily paper. And, when I later worked at advertising agencies, there were always plenty knocking around if I wanted to have a quick flick through their pages. As such, I am in no way a typical customer to the newspaper industry.

That said, I still enjoy a browse on a Sunday or of an evening. And, it would seem, plenty of… Continue
