Why you should think before thoughtlessly following thought-leaders

Purposely Pretentious Professionals

As a “what you see is what you get” kind of gal that communicates in a plain and direct “tell it like it is” or “call it like I see it” style, the opinions I’m about to share may not appeal to those with different sensibilities. For that reason, the following serves as a disclaimer should you continue reading: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” Dr. Seuss

10 Ways to Double Your Monthly Placement Rate

A good measure of recruiter performance is placements per month, with sendouts (interviews arranged with hiring managers) per month and sendouts per hire being the two key performance drivers for this.

For third-party recruiters, add fee per placement to obtain total billings per month as another critical performance measure.

Whether you’re a third-party or corporate recruiter, making more placements per month would be a good thing. With this goal in mind, here are 10…

X-Raying Boolean Search Strings to Identify Linkedin Profiles that may be Private in Linkedin - Viewable!

Hi Team,

As you know I love sourcing and uncovering new ways to help us become more successful in our roles. Boolean logic is something I am very interested in. Some of you may have general Linkedin profiles and you may not actually be able to view candidates in your network as their profiles may be private or not shared with everyone. So, I started thinking about how we can get around that for you and began doing research. Here’s what I found to assist one of my co-workers…

All I Want for Christmas: Recruiting Edition

With Christmas only a few days away, I figured it was a great time to get my wish list together for 2013.  But this year it’s not about toys and gifts but more so about the ideas and strategies that I hope catch on in the new year.  Ones that I think can help recruiting organizations derive more value out of the resources they have and in turn recruit more qualified talent into their organizations.

So without delay, here are the 10 things I want to see recruiting…

Studs & Cuddlers: The future of Talent Assessment: How many Sexual Partners have you had?

No, I'm not seriously expecting you to go out and ask that question of the next person you interview for a sales or recruitment role, but hear me out on my logic.

I've spent a decade and a half interviewing candidates for all types of positions but I guess the ones I have cared about the most have been the candidates I interviewed to come work with me. When I am hiring recruiters, I make sure to look for proven sales experience…

Why I stay away from job boards….

I will first say that I do see value in job boards, and believe it is a critical tool to become successful as a sourcer/recruiter.  It’s like building a house.  You can not and would not build a house with just one tool.  It takes many tools to build a home that will stand the test of time.  As a recruiter/sourcer, you need to take the same approach when finding the perfect candidate.  Not only will you be successful, but you will be able to find candidates no one else is working with. …

Gangnam Style, La Macarena, and Achy Breaky Heart

So what is all the noise about Gangnam Style??  People were talking about the song at work last week. What is that dance?!  What in the world are my co-workers doing?!  I had to check it out, so I did a youtube search.  …

Prepare for the worst...

Being a recruiter, it is part of your job to tell candidates when they are not being considered for a position, when they blew an interview, and when they no longer have a job.  Looking for a job can be a very emotional time for a candidate, and breaking this type of news to them is not an easy thing to do.

During my career I have had to do this many times, and I can say with certainty I would be more than happy to give a candidate the benefit of the doubt if they…

Proactive vs Reactive vs Just in time vs Pipelining!!

So one thing I have been hearing a lot of is Proactive vs reactive vs just in time vs pipelining. Or more specifically what do they mean. So here we go;

Proactive; when someone, usually a staffing professional, proactively goes out and searches for…

The very best of ‘The Savage Truth’ 2012

Farewell 2012. Another massive year in recruitment, with, if anything, even more challenges than the year prior.

“The Savage Truth“ clocked up dozens of blog posts during the year, trying to make sense of it all. And the readership has grown exponentially over that time, so I am grateful for the support from so many.  In fact, visitor numbers to The Savage Truth in 2012 are up 33% from 2011.

Below is a list of the most…

While the world most likely won’t end on December 21, 2012, it can be the end of ineffective business practices in favor of true best practices that achieve better results.

These include:

Always be collaborating versus always be closing

Yes, it’s the job of sales to facilitate a process that ultimately closes the deal. However, over-used and ineffective closing techniques, such as the assumptive close and the hard close, are hardly the way to build a…

10 earth-shattering things that happened in online recruiting in 2012

Hey, it’s the end of the year (almost) and time to take a look at what happened in 2012. Did anything? Well, actually, yes – quite a bit. Apart from an election, a (slowly) recovering economy, and a snazzy James Bond film, it did seem like 2012 was a busy year for online recruiting. Here are my picks for the most notable:…
