On 21st century workplace revisonism...

Quote for the Day: Monday, August 6th, 2007

"Hierarchical, system-centered thinking, while not warm or fuzzy, has produced enormous benefits over the last century, and more gains are likely to be in store. Its single-minded focus on maximizing efficiency has driven productivity in manufacturing and much of the service sector higher and higher. Such gains would have been hard to achieve if managers gave workers free rein."

I've been tagged several times. I guess I'm the slow runner

I’ve been tagged. Thanks, Amybeth, Lesley, and Karen. Does that mean I can tag several people back? Things that make you go hhhhmmmmm. What that means is that I need to tell eight things about myself that you probably didn’t know. These are also things that you might not have wanted to know, but the “Tag Receiver Code” commits me to comply."

THE RULES: 1. Post…

On rules for IBMers on Second Life...

Quote for the Day: Friday, August 3rd, 2007

"Building a reputation of trust within a virtual world represents a commitment to be truthful and accountable with fellow digital citizens. Dramatically altering, splitting or abandoning your digital persona may be a violation of that trust. ... In the case of a digital persona used for IBM business purposes, it may violate your obligations to IBM."

How does a good Sourcing professional continue to develop all the talent in their pool? (Question posted by Jeremy Langhans)

This is a good question in that it helps to define the role of a Sourcer by the contemporary standards associated with recruiting. Wikipedia defines the sourcing function as it relates to recruiting as "...the identification and uncovering of candidates (also known as talent) through proactive recruiting techniques." (Wikipedia,…

On longing for the good ol' days of Recruiting 1.0...

Quote for the Day: Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

"Recruiting 2.0. I say phewy! Get recruiting 1.0 right first, people. Remember the days when TPR's actually headhunted vs trolled the job boards? Remember the days when Corporate Recruiters actually added value vs spammed the hiring manager with resumes?. Long for those days? I do, and I wonder if we will ever get them back when technology seems to be making us lazier instead of really adding value where it matters…

Monster Stumbles. Is CareerBuilder Next?

Monster announced yesterday that it is laying off 15% of its workforce,

or roughly 800 people. The announcement followed the release of their

quarterly financials - Q2 earnings dropped 28% even though revenue was

up 20%. Looks like costs have gotten somewhat out of control. And no

wonder, considering the fact that Monster’s ability to keep visitors

coming to its site has become increasingly difficult and increasingly

costly. Perhaps they’ve gone too far in the… Continue

8 things you oughta know about me...

so jeremy tagged me for this, the whole eight things you don't know bit, seems interesting since a lot of folks here may not know these assorted items...oh, but do pardon my salty language...but since all of you know how vulgar i am i suppose none of this will come as a surprise...

...and btw, not sure which eight to tag, so instead of gonna say same other 7 as jeremy's post (good list!) and perhaps add shally to that roster (was he on it?)

1) as a young child i… Continue

The Opposite of Etiquette

Today on Yahoo's homepage there is a link to an article by the Brazen Careerist, Penelope Trunk. For the most part, I can see her point of view on most subjects, however this article is just plain bizzaro world. I am a Gen X'er. I am 30 years old. I am the new regime. Her tips on the "new workplace etiquette" are going to get people fired.

For example, she recommends:…

Eight Things You Might Not Have Wanted To Know About Me

Oh Dear...I'm usually not one to follow up on these things, but my internet research colleague Amybeth Hale deemed me a good candidate for this, so here goes:

2. List 8 random facts about yourself.

3. At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names (linking to them)

On weird onboarding...

Quote for the Day: Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

"Encourage people to ignore superiors and peers. Hire defiant outsiders. Rather than teaching newcomers about company history or procedure, have the newcomers teach the old-timers how to think and act. Encourage people to drive you crazy by doing what they think is right rather than what they are told. "
