WOW - Now Tell Me Social Media Doesn't Open Doors!!! (Especially After You Take Off That Orange Jump Suit!)

I thought about coming up with a rhyme to accompany this post . . . but I couldn't bring myself to do it. If you're wondering why, it'll make sense in un momento:

"McDonald's robber among finalists for new jingle"

Our boy, Tamien Bain, served 12 years after holding up (at gunpoint) a McDonalds in 1994 . . . .

. . . And is among five finalists in… Continue

Hiring Practices That Kill Deals… or How to Avoid Faceplanting in the Net

In the early spring of this year, the flowers were blooming, birds were singing, and I began to plan my summer garden. The previous year was a complete bust for my container garden. Poor location coupled with an unusually cool and cloudy summer doomed my basil and tomatoes from the outset, and my peppers didn’t fare much better. Relocating the container garden to my back yard would afford it better sunshine (if there was sunshine to be had) and a location that would make it easier to water and… Continue

Our two 800-pound gorillas are not the only ones launching job boards. It seems everyone and their brother has one now. Even Microsoft is at it with TaskMarket.com, a marketplace for buyers and suppliers of business services (under $500).

UK Job Climate Worsens, But All Is Not Lost

The health of the online recruitment market in the UK seems to have taken a noticeable dip in the last couple of months; at least that’s our conclusion after some analysis of the data driving the born index.

The index, which tracks over 70 leading job boards in the UK and measures the job advertising volumes on the sites, experienced a notable decline last month. June’s index figure was down 3 points on [more...]

Why Can’t the Recruiting & Staffing Industry Operate More Like the Real Estate Industry?

In the real estate industry both buyer and seller can have a representative. A listing agent represents the seller after securing an exclusive right to market a property. A buyer's agent works to find the right property that meets their client’s requirements. A listing agent will almost always post their listing with a multiple listing service (MLS) to achieve the maximum exposure for the listed property. A buyer's agent knows to go to a MLS to see what properties are available that meet the… Continue

Big Mistakes You Could Be Making At Work

What you consider to be innocent small talk, bonding with co-workers, or just doing your job, may be doing more damage than you think.

Work Mistake #1: Talking Politics

If you are talking politics at work and a co-worker bashes your candidate preference, how do you feel? I would assume a little upset. You may also feel that they are uninformed or ignorant. Now, imagine how that co-worker feels if you do the same to them? Eeek! Not everyone is the same, some people just… Continue

Most Common Phone Interview Questions

The Phone interview plays a crucial role in a candidate’s pre-hire process. This means that the employer has reviewed the candidate’s resume and or application and they are showing some interest which is a positive step forward, although the candidate is still far away from being hired! The phone interview in many cases may be a make-it or break-it for many candidates as this is mainly a way for the employer to verify if the “you” the candidate are both a cultural and technical fit for their… Continue

Phone Interview v. Live Interview

While there is a purpose for a phone interview and a purpose for a live interview, which one is more beneficial?

The phone interview is often used as a way to screen potential candidates while a live interview is used to further understand potential candidates. But what if the screening process was flawed? That’s right, flawed. While some beneficial information is gathered during a phone interview, even more beneficial information is left out. This could result in you selecting a bad… Continue

Job Interview: Decoding The Handshake

A handshake, whether at a job interview or business meeting, can have several meanings. Not only is it important to focus on how someone is shaking your hand, but on how you shake their hand as well! Handshake meanings vary from country to country so keep in mind, the following apply only to the U.S.:

Job Interview Handshake #1: Palm Up

If you go to shake someone’s hand and you intentionally face your palm up, it can indicate humility. If you go to shake someone’s hand and… Continue
