Brands are fascinating. Search Google and you get 525 million hits. Search your home and you’ll find virtually every surface either branded or displaying something branded. Shut your eyes and think for a moment and chances are good even your internal landscape is cluttered with brands. And if you’re among the top 15% of consumers, you (and the other 14.xxx%) account for approximately 1.5 billion brand…

It funny how people get so anxious and nervous about interviewing. Sure the people you meet with during an interview aren’t people you know and it won’t be easy to judge the meaning of their words and inflections much less their body language, but is it really that different from what you do everyday?
In your current position you’re constantly making sure your boss, peers and clients/customers are pleased with your work, attitude and effort. So aren’t you really interviewing everyday…

Do you lead one? Do you have one? It's a pretty good question these days since there's a lot of talk about Tribes going around. And it seems to be an evolving situation but an interesting one since it's apparent that it's becoming a very powerful cultural phenomenon. I would say that it's probably because of the increased connectivity we all have allows us access to people who have the same views and values. For more on Tribes, I would recommend Seth Godin's book, oddly enough titled:…

Reflections on the unconference TruLondon
Today was an auspicious event: Trulondon an unconference planned by Bill Boorman and his merry band of geniuses. I have admired Bill from afar because he embodies something sorely missing from the industry of recruiting: a heart of gold.
It has been an honor to participate in Bill’s blogradio show over the past few weeks. I am the girl who toots the horn of compassion. We simply can’t take the “human” out of human resources, yet so…

Having the technical competencies necessary to perform a job function seems to be a pretty universally accepted requirement in order to be considered a viable candidate. However, it is perhaps equally important what the personality and attitude are in the package-deal that is a new hire. With more and more companies adopting behavioral or corporate culture-based interviews it seems the trend is to hire based on soft skills as well. The only question is, what makes a person a good fit for a…

Welcome to Thursday Thrasher with Lizz Pellet, the Culture Vulture.

With cutbacks from the economy, more recruiters than ever are running a full desk. You may have been thrust suddenly into the role of Account Manager or Business Development in addition to your normal recruiting duties. If you're new to the world of staffing sales, then you may not know that not all job orders are created equal. In fact, you might be so anxious to get a "yes" out of a client that you forget all about some important factors that will predict the outcome of any job…

Recruiter. Headhunter. Staffing Consultant. Placement Specialist. Talent Acquisition and Retention Specialist.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! Let’s call it what it really is – we are your Agent. OH YES – think Jerry Maguire
“Show ME THE MONEY” Cuba Gooding yelling in the bathroom kind of agent. And no – I will not scream into the phone for you. I love you – but that just seems weird and it’s been done…

In keeping with the football theme from last week’s post, not only did I marry a man who loves football, my Father also has a tremendous love of the game. My Dad played for the mighty undefeated Marcellus Mustangs in a suburb of Syracuse, NY in 1963. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard about that team or how certain aspects of how that high school senior year season impacts my dad’s life. Since my dad grew up in the Syracuse area and went to…

Have you ever seen the Fox hit television show, 24? It is gripping, action-packed and beyond unrealistic, yet I am hooked every season. 24’s hero and main man, Jack Bauer, is infamous for his 9 lives and vicious interrogation tactics that pry anything he wants out of his unsuspecting victims. Looking back on a few interviews I have been on…maybe Jack Bauer was the one who was sitting on the other side of the table, not the Hiring Manager.
There’s nothing worse than getting grilled by…

Recruiting Blogs and Twitter allows for free conference access!
I have so many blessings to count. Recruiting Blogs, Twitter, and the friends I’ve made as a direct result is one of these vital connections. My connections on twitter and other sites have made it possible to attend conferences for free. As a professional in transition, this is an invaluable asset for which I am extremely grateful.

Are You A Natural Born Recruiter?
What does it take to recruit talent these days? Is it as easy as it once was? When all it took was to post an advertisement in the trades, newspaper, job boards, Craigslist, or better yet, to actually pick up a phone and put the word out to your “network” for referrals? Do you remember when you would actually post jobs on a piece of paper in the lunch room so employees could apply to them before you even started the recruiting process accepting…

What makes someone “Professional”?
I’ve read interesting takes on that question lately. Some good points, and some… not so much. What defines professionalism? Based on various pieces I’ve read, it’s certainly subjective. Whatever the definition anyone uses, it’s often THE factor that tips the scale from one candidate to another in the hiring process.
In trying to define it, the dictionary doesn’t seem to be much help. Webster defines professionalism as: “the conduct, aims,…

I recently read a blog which talked about how social media and networking sites were going to be the death of the recruiter. I disagree, if anything I believe the role of recruiter has become ever more important, but has also changed.
The argument in this blog was that the internet has enabled accessibility to candidates that would never have been possible before the internet revolution. Therefore by posting a few ads and doing some poking around on LinkedIn HR team can now source…

Like many of my fellow HR professionals this week, I have been busy reading all the fantastic blog posts related to the Human Resources (un)conference November 6-8th, 2009 in Louisville, KY. I have been blown away with the take-a-ways and conversation that HR Evolution has so far generated. I was particularly intrigued by our opening and closing sessions with regard to social media.
And then I had a thought. . .…

We've just been through a brutal economic storm. If you were sheltered, great - good for you.
But pay attention anyway, because this storm wreaked havoc on many of the people you'll meet in the next stages of your career. You are going to meet and work with a lot of people who've been burned. So many that the American business landscape is never going to look the same again.
At the height of the crisis, large companies fired thousands of employees to preserve profits. In many…

For the last 50+ years the US has been importing the top intellectual minds from developing countries, through offering subsidized education, the promise of full-time employment, and a better standard of living… ie “The American Dream”.
As these Top Immigrant Intellects completed their degrees, masters programs, and PhD’s, US companies snatched them up with lucrative visa policies and wages that provided a very high standard of living, compared to their home countries. Today, many of…
