Need Your Help - Which Cover Would You Choose?

It has been 2 years in the making now and my book is now only weeks away from hitting the bookshelves. The book selling giant Amazon.com will be publishing it which I am obviously super pumped about.

The book is titled, "The 10 Key Interviewing T.E.C.H.N.I.Q.U.E.S." and is written for the job seeker on how to master the interview process. I have had great initial response and look forward to its… Continue

Simple steps for GREAT cover letters

There are two simple steps for great cover letters:

1. Always include the cover letter in the body of the email you are sending. If the recruiter has to click to open a separate document in order to read your cover letter, chances are that they won’t bother.

2. Target each cover letter to the specific position for which you are applying. Generic cover letters that tell how great YOU are and what YOU want to do without… Continue

Demystifying the Cover Letter

stressguy1 People get so stressed about the cover letter.

  • Do I send?
  • How long should it be?
  • What should I put in it?
  • Do I put salary requirements in it?
Let's start with the first question. Carol from North Carolina said to me: "When sending in my resume for a job, I don't send a cover letter. It doesn't give me any advantage in getting the… Continue

Big Bucks NO Whammies……

For those of you out there who were children of the 80’s (or perhaps a bit older), hopefully you will remember the show – Press Your Luck. Contestants would collect spins that led to prizes after the spin traveled around a makeshift digital game board, all the while yelling “BIG BUCKS NO WHAMMIES.” I promise this has a point.

The other day, I was talking with a friend who was flustered about their resume and cover letter in an attempt to find the perfect recipe for submitting… Continue

Happy Birthday to ME!

December 10th, 3:35 pm (early and convenient timing - I would point out)

As you know, if you have read or listened to me much, I am a strong advocate of telling people what you need or how they can help. I know that if I understand what I can do for you (and it is within reason), I am going to do my best to try to help. I introduce people all the time (no, not just candidates and clients), I write articles for others, give helpful (I hope) critique to others about whatever they ask me to… Continue

Why aren’t there female medical sales managers?

This question was posted on my LinkedIn page, along with these comments:

Person with question says:

My company is a perfect example of a large scale device organization with few women. Only 1 woman in an executive position and none in upper management. I have spoken with some women who say they were discouraged from pursuing management positions and have been passed over, for less qualified men.

My conclusion/response:

1. Fewer women in the sciences (narrows the… Continue

JMO separating from military uses the medical sales recruiter to land super job stateside…

Here’s a great article for you to see: Military Are Getting Short-Changed On the Job Front, Too, by Teena Rose. I met Teena on Twitter. She is the head of Resume to Referral, which provides resume-writing and career services for mid-level career to executive professionals. In her article, she talks about her husband’s career transition from the military to the private sector and the lessons he learned, which can be helpful for all of us–the main one being: don’t count on the military (read: one… Continue

10 Germiest Jobs In America…

The Dark Daily (Clinical Laboratory and Pathology News/Trends), which I read frequently, recently reported a study of the 10 Germiest Jobs In America, by “Dr. Germ,” AKA Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D., a microbiologist at the University of Arizona in Tuscon. Here’s the list:

1) Teacher, day care workers

2) Cashier, bank employee

3) Tech support, computer repair.

4) Doctor or nurse

5) Lab scientist

6) Police officer

7) Animal control officer

8) Janitor or… Continue

Top 5 pharma layoffs in 2008 -

Fierce Pharma outlines how 20,000 pharma folks were laid off from 5 companies in 2008.

I hate to point this out, but if big pharma can let all of those folks go without major issues continuing to do business, then those employees were not adding value (or very much of it).

As one marketeer put it to me: if you can’t show me where you made me $$, saved me $$ or saved me time - why do I employ you? Pharma sales reps with biology/chemistry or molecular degrees - send me your… Continue

Job Search Tip: What can a recruiter do for you?

Since I’ve discussed with you before how to work with recruiter and the best ways for you to attract the attention of a recruiter, I thought I’d add one more thing, just so we’re all on the same page…for you to understand the role a recruiter plays in your job search, you need to understand that I work for the client company, not for you. That doesn’t mean working with a medical sales recruiter isn’t an asset for you in your search for a medical sales job, such as a biotech sales job, clinical… Continue

How to Work a Tradeshow

I had a candidate call me and ask for advice on how to work a tradeshow. He’s looking for a job, and exploring many avenues. He’s already ahead of the game by having a plan, but here’s my advice:

Before the show:

Send out an e-mail to all of your contacts, letting them know what’s going on, that you’ll be at the tradeshow, and that you’re looking for contacts and opportunities. Be specific in what you’re looking for…a sales/marketing/management job in medical sales,… Continue

Interview Questions for Employers

I am pleased to present this article from Alan Murray, webmaster of http://www.interviewquestions.name/, where Alan provides a lot of great interview advice.

Interview Questions for Employers

If you are tasked to conduct a job interview for your company, one of the most important things that you should always keep in mind is the fact that the main purpose of the interview is to get to know the candidate better. You are there to ask and listen, not to talk. To be specific, eighty… Continue

Job Interview Tip: Turn off your cell phone!

Cell phones are an incredible convenience for all of us, but also a major source of irritation when people don’t remember their manners while using them in public places. One of the biggest blunders you can make? Answering your phone while in a job interview!! Seems obvious, I know, but believe me, it happens. If you answer your cell while in an interview for medical sales, pharmaceutical sales, laboratory sales, clinical diagnostics sales, medical supplies sales, pathology sales, imaging… Continue

Technology sheet-use in job interview to get that medical sales job!

Sometimes candidates with degrees in the sciences find that they have a lot more information that the employer might want to know about them that just won’t fit in the traditional resume format. To combat that issue and give yourself an interview edge, consider building a “Technology Sheet” - this is a one-page, column-formated accounting of all of the technologies that you are familiar with…some candidates actually rate their expertise with each (1 to 10).

It not always necessary to… Continue

Job Search Tip: How to Attract a Recruiter's Attention

OK, so this title isn’t nearly as cool as the title of the article I want to talk about: How to Headhunt the Headhunters, by Tara Weiss from Forbes.com. But, that’s the way it goes. The article got my attention and it has some great information I want to pass along to you.

First, don’t just send your resume out indiscriminately. I get the concept of “flooding the market” with your info, but it just doesn’t work.

What does work? Find a recruiter who specializes in your… Continue

Job Search Tip: Complete the Entire Job Application

Latest story: A hiring manager I am working with in medical sales asked for a completed job application, rather than just a resume. The job is a 65 -75k base, with another 45k up for grabs in commissions. Nothing to sneeze at, surely. When the manager reviewed the application, he discovered that the candidate didn’t fill out the references area or any of the money questions. (You do leave this stuff off a resume, but not off an application when they are specifically asked for.) The manager that… Continue

It wasn't the job interview questions that cost you the job!

If I told you there was a very good way to DECREASE your chances of getting a job in medical sales (laboratory sales, pharmaceutical sales, clinical diagnostics sales, imaging sales, DNA products sales, hospital equipment sales, medical device sales, surgical supplies sales, or any healthcare sales) BY OVER 30%, you’d want to know what it was so you could avoid that at all costs, right? Here it is: it’s your Facebook page. Or your MySpace page, or other social networking site… Continue
