To me the internet is the shining light on the economic horizon. I see it opening up so many doors. This world of social networking is amazingly powerful. That fact that people from all over the world can connect and relate is wonderful. I think we are on the edge of some remarkable changes where the "little guys" voice and influence can effect great changes.

By applying specialised search techniques, online talent search specialists are able to uncover passive candidates in the shadowy Deep Web - wherever they gather to work and play.
The employment market is generally categorised into three main talent pools, namely the unemployed Job Seekers, the employed job seekers and the passive (non-job seeking) candidate. By understanding the nature of these various talent pools, Recruiters are in a better position to attract the right…

I've previously
expressed my views on the role corporate recruiters need to play in delivering a good message on behalf of the company, so it should come as no surprise that I put a lot of effort into making sure any candidate I recruit is really pumped up about coming to work here.
I generally let the candidate take a lead role here, directing me on the tour of my company to the various…

8 tools to find semantic similarity between words
Semantic net
The big news this week has been Google announcing their use of semantics to enhance the performance of the search engine. This will not come as a surprise to computer scientists working in the language field (IR, NLP etc…). There are also already quite a few semantic search engines around like cognition for example. I think we were waiting for Google to take this step for a while and now it has it’s really…

People are running to and fro suspended in disbelief regarding the economic downturn and the announcement of ever increasing layoffs. Passions are at a high, and people are lucky to get a job is the general view all around. Does that leave no room for negotiation I was asked? If I get selected, can I still negotiate salary or are they simply going to select the next person out of the 100 applicants. What am I to do?
Lets talk about Jennifer.
Jennifer is a mid level systems…

This is a subject and conversation that I have had with so many people over the years. With it there comes a lot of strong opinions from all sides stating their perspective on why/why not to do this, or how to approach it. It surfaced this morning in a discussion about why people will not take certain jobs, and the fact that a high powered engineer we were working with has been turning down job offers in this economy. Do people do that I was asked……the answer is YES and for good…

In the last several months, there have been a huge number of layoffs. Lots of very talented, experienced, and motivated folks have unfortunately been affected. Earlier this week, I read an article written by GL Hoffman on US News entitled
When HR is Bad PR. The article highlights the efforts that should be made to reply to candidates. The article made think - “How many more resumes are recruiters…

Every successful professional can recall the exact moment when the "seed" to succeed was planted by their mentor.
In most cases it was that moment you and someone kind enough to help your career forged a bond in mentorship. That one person you fondly remember as your first (and maybe only) mentor was the catalyst that woke you up to the potential that lay within your mind and soul. Your mentor was the person who showed you what you could become with effort and attentive skills to…

A recent New York Times article entitled “Economy to Entrepreneurs: Turn Back” (September 13, 2008) written by Julie Bick stated that “Amid the current economic turmoil, many entrepreneurs… and small-business are debating whether it makes sense to seek safety in the corporate life — and deciding that it does.” In the first two quarters of 2008, there were roughly 18,500 business bankruptcies, according to Dr. Chad Moutray, chief economist of the federal Small Business Administration. As an…

IT is widely accepted that, in small pockets around the world, the second iteration of the war for talent is well underway. Emerging companies in China, for example, are invading small rural villages in an effort to convert agrarian citizens into knowledge workers, and professional service firms are eagerly grasping at once undesired college new grads.
It would be logical to assume that growth-oriented firms would be devising new methods to uncover hidden sources of talent and fend off…

Author of nearly a dozen books, Jeffrey Fox shares, “The job interview is a sales call to sell yourself." The goal of the interview is for the hiring company to “buy” you. At which point you receive an offer letter, you have a clear picture of the exact value of the transaction. However, the decision to buy happens long before the offer letter.
Critical Start
Hiring decision are made much earlier than most people imagine. Neil Anderson (1992) states "interviewers are far…

Harvard Business Review on the Long Tail
Anita Elberse of Harvard Business School has completed a new look at consumer data to write a piece entitled Should You Invest in the Long Tail? Her article seems to be written as a corrective to some of the hoopla around Chris Anderson’s book, The Long Tail. Her article is worth reading but mainly for the quality of her research. The analysis,…

Problem: You're a hiring manager, not a professional recruiter, who needs hire the best candidate quickly while still doing your day job. Quickly, your email inbox fills with resumes, you forward them on to other decision team members for feedback. Some respond quickly, others more slowly. Meanwhile, you are trying to keep track of peoples thoughts on each candidate while still more resumes and follow-ups are filling your inbox. All you need is a…

I received an email the other day from LinkedIn pal,
Larry Megugorac, who is a Business Development/Sales professional, saying:
“I’ve got to hand to you....I cannot figure out how a former Accountant goes into Recruiting.
Obviously being in sales before-hand helped tremendously. I always thought that Accountants were a conservative group. Recruiters only get paid when they make a successful placement right? I thought…

I'd forgotten the fun of Internet search.
I had a job come in during January. The position was for a senior-level manager in the R&D software group of a major storage business. The customer told me in the specifications that the person we were looking for was "an uber-geek who has the capacity and the desire…
