The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

Recently, I was looking over some of my recruiting material from about 14+ years ago. I reviewed all the sections about sourcing candidates (from cold calls to referrals), picking up job leads from newspapers (remember those) to references and many other "old school" techniques. Here is what I realized; Nothing today is really NEW!

Think about it; what "inventions" are really new? Data storage; sure the way we store the data has changed from… Continue

Village People Unite, but Please NO Chaps at Work!

It has been way too long since my last post on RBC, I miss my village! Village? Let me explain.

This week my company kicked off our annual meeting, discussing 2009 successes and 2010+ plans. One of our main issues (like so many other recruiting firms) is everyone working towards common "team" goals. We are in an individual rewards environment (for the most part), but always chant the mantra of "go team".

Being the prolific and… Continue

Don't Get Scrooged This Season

I wrote this poem last night for my blog and wanted to share with all my friends on RecruitingBlogs, I hope you enjoy!

T’was the month of Christmas and all across the land,

clients and competitors were seeking the upper hand.

When all of the sudden to ACME Inc’s delight,

their big push for 2009 came into the light.

Recession, layoffs and hiring freezes they faced;

all were behind them, they picked up the pace.

But 18 days in December,… Continue

I Found My Mojo - Yeah Baby, Yeah!!!

How many people will get up at x time tomorrow, drive x route, drink x drink, work x plan, have x meeting, drive home at x time, eat supper at x time and go to bed at x time?

Routine kills creativity!

This was a conclusion that my team and I came too several weeks ago. It was right before I was leaving for Recruitfest and I was explaining the non traditional set up and my excitement leading up to the event. One team… Continue

Big Shoes Leave Lasting Footprints!

Do you remember what you had for breakfast yesterday? What about lunch? These are little things and you may or may not remember the answers to these two questions.

Now, do you remember your first car? Your first date? The birth of your first child? These are big things and will have a lasting footprint on your life. How do we make ourselves so BIG, so memorable to people around us. Here are few ideas;

1. Differentiation: Separate yourself from competitors. If they are… Continue

Do your top prospects know that they are your top prospects?

In our business we are constantly putting together plans; sales plans, call plans, recruiting plans, marketing plans. Recently we initiated a huge marketing campaign complete with timelines, brochures and touch points. Now all we required was a list from our sales team of their top 20 prospects. Easy enough, the lists are compiled and released to marketing!

But one questions jumped out to me; “Do our top prospects know that they are our top prospect? Campaigns are great, they get the… Continue

Be a Social T-Rex™

What the heck is a "Social T-Rex™". Think about this; no one alive has ever seen a T-Rex, yet everyone knows who he is, his reputation and when you hear his name, you get an automatic visual.

So how do you become a "Social T-Rex™"? Not in terms of extinction, but in preservation. Here are 5 suggestions:

1. Be Big:

Create a "big" image of yourself. Recruiters are naturally social creatures; use your tools to build your image.

2. Be Bold:

There are many… Continue

Ma Bell Called, Your Hired (or Not)

In a recent Wall Street Journal article titled "The New Trouble on the Line", the writer provided keen details on how important phone interviews are to the process. I know many of our clients are conducting highly detailed and multiple phone interviews. This article brought back a flurry of memories and reminds us how important it is to prep people for the phone interview(s).

The extensive nature of the interview is not limited to full time employees. We also find more extensive… Continue

The F in Recruiter

When you think of the common traits of a recruiter, you typically think about many; driven, motivated, gregarious, talkative, hard working....the list can go on. This list will be full of strong adjectives and can become quite the long list.

I have boiled the traits of a recruiter down into two: Fight or Flight.

A fighter is in it to win, takes the punches, takes his/her bumps, rides the coaster up and down. When pushed/backed into the corner, this person will come out… Continue

The Dirty Words Recruiters Use

Let me start by saying, I love the recruiting business. Our business has provided my family and I (wife and 4 kids - all 5 and under!!), with an excellent living. In the past several years I have been more on the management side and given the opportunity to train and develop many new recruiters within both the corporate and agency side.

Over the years there are several words, words that I consider "dirty words", that I have seen destroy personal success and production. No recruiter… Continue

The Bear's view of the economy

With all the current economic woes, I am constantly asked by.....well everyone, "when will it get better". Lots of predictions are being made, but the bottom line is, we don't know. So let me share a story about tough times getting better;

3 years ago I was laid off (terminated, downsized, pick the term) from a large corporate entity. I could see it coming, so months prior I had incorporated myself, just in case termination was in the cards. I set up shop in my home and within 2… Continue
