Negotiating Salaries, some perspective for candidates

That's right we're talking about $ money $.

Money buys us stuff that we need and stuff that we want. It's a sensitive topic when you're negotiating a salary because both sides have opposite goals in mind. One side wants to pay as little as possible and the other wants to get as much as possible.

The bottom line is everyone wants more of it. We all know that going into the conversation. The …

True "must reads"

There are a lot of books out about success.  I read Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective people" when I was in High School.  I read "Rich Dad Poor Dad", "The Richest Man in Babylon", and other like books including "The Millionaire Next Door".  I love these kind of books that tell important real life lessons of work ethic, thinking long term and building wealth for future security.  There are books like "Outliers" also that talk about the differences of what makes someone like Bill…

In-House Recruiting, especially Technical and Executive search (The high dollar positions) according to the WSJ

Interesting WSJ article.

Hope your doing well. Just thought I'd share some news from the WSJ.

I've personally noticed this trend as well. What do you think?

Business Development - The art and science of client acquisition and client management

Now that I've written a few blogs, I get contacted rather regularly about some of my more popular articles.  Its rewarding to think people actually read them and find that it helps them in some way.  That's cool!  Recently, a recruiter asked me if I had any blogs or tips on business development.  I promptly answered no but thanks.  This is an important topic and it certainly should be discussed.  So lets discuss some meat and potatoes of our business.  How do we land our customers?  How do…

Recruiting Trade Secrets for Beginners

So the title got your attention did it?  Well, then hopefully you get something out of this post that helps you improve your recruitment whether your an internal corporate recruiter or a third party agency person.

Before we begin, let me dispel some assumptions.  There are no trade secrets to reveal here.  What I'm going to share is maybe some ideas to counter what you THINK are the right things to do to be successful.  Some common misconceptions, if you…

Approach and style of conversation

One of the ways you immediately know when someone is junior is when they "follow the book".  They talk like they're reading from a script.  They greet you with unnecessary formalities and communicate with you like they "think they should".  There is absolutely nothing wrong with this except that it doesn't feel genuine and tells the person on the other end of the conversation that you're kind of new at this.

On the flip side, I was told recently that a client thought I was…

When do you just walk away?

If you've been in the business long enough, then you've experienced situations that made you upset, angry, irritated.  People are irritating, sometimes situations are upsetting and at other times, things happen.  As recruiters, we might work contingent or on contract or for an industry player but either way, there are times when we've considered walking away either from an unreasonable client or from the field of recruiting all together.  "ENOUGH!" we said.…

Blogs, Wikipedia, and the dangers of moving digital

I've heard recently that Britanica is going out of print.  For those of you who don't know, Britanica used to publish many versions of books called Encyclopedias. Back when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, these books were an excellent source of world information.  In today's ultra fast moving information age, these books simply cannot keep up with the changing info that's more easily accessible online and not only that but we all know that people simply aren't reading books…

Urban Legends about Recruiters / Myths

I've been a recruiter for 12 years and still every day, I come across people who have no idea what I do for a living.  They simply don't understand the concept of a recruiter.  As if that isn't enough, there is tons of misinformation out there about who we are and how we earn a living.  I hope this clarifies it for the general public.  To me, this is a PSA. :)

#1 - Giving someone the title, makes it so.

Just because you call your Honda a…

The DNA of a perm fee agreement

The fee agreement should be simple shouldn't it?  I mean it should be as simple as, A agrees to do this for B and B agrees to pay X to A for the service rendered PERIOD.

Unfortunately, life isn't that simple but it's not terribly complex either.  There are only a finite amount of things can actually happen to potentially derail an otherwise successful placement.  So lets discuss what a good fee agreement, in my opinion should be made of, the DNA, if you…

"The customer is always right", modernly.

We've all heard that adage, "The customer is always right".  Growing up, I didn't put much thought into it.  Of course the customer is always right, I'm the customer paying my hard earned money for a product or service so I should get whatever I want duh!  As I grew older, I learned what that really meant.  Think about who is making this statement.  It's the vendor, the business owner, the proprietor telling his customer "The customer is always right" or maybe his employee "The customer is…

The 31 flavors of recruiting - you're one of these

So, I posted this originally back in 2009 on my bloodspot blog "The Recruiter Chronicles"  Updated it again a bit essentially the same.  The reason I posted this was to help non recruiters appreciate and understand the different forms of recruiting and their individual strengths and weaknesses.  Also, for recruiters who have had a singular track, perhaps they could consider switching it up if they feel their strengths are better utilized in a different version of what they are already doing.…

References - is it worth it?

Back in the days, references were an essential part of the recruitment life-cycle.  Once someone got scheduled with a client, you would tell the candidate to begin gathering their references ready for contact.  That they would only be contacted should the candidate receive an offer and that you would allow that candidate time to make sure those references were aware they were about to be contacted by a recruiter for a brief conversation about their work experience with this particular…

ATS - Awful Time Sucker

Applicant Tracking Systems are software systems designed to track, organize, and communicate with applicants in a database that is searchable and easy to use.  For non recruiters, ATS is a recruiter tool much like CRM is to salespeople and Google is to the general public.  Not great examples but about as close as it gets.

I've used, seen, or evaluated over 30 different ATS over the years.  I've talked to many recruiters as well about these and others that I haven't even seen…

Networking - Not Glengarry Glenross but similar

This is an exert from my blog "The Recruiter Chronicles" on Blogspot posted November 15, 2011.  I've made a few minor updates but either way, I figured this was a good one to start with.

You hear it all the time, in order to get a job you should "network". Reach out to your "network". Network marketing, networking, social networks.... its as if the the word "network" has become the magic business catch phrase of our generation. I guess it makes sense. Its usually through…
