Mentors: Get One / Be One

Most successful people can cite one or two key individuals who guided and helped them early on, and from whom they learned so much.  Mentors can be a significant part of our success.  People who have good mentors are lucky, right?  Luck is where preparedness meets opportunity.  We need to proactively seek mentors, and cultivate relationships with them, not…

Best Jobs In America

I recently came across this interesting Infographic, originally part of an article in CNN’s Money Magazine online.  They use very good criteria to decide what are good jobs: Pay, long-term potential, resistance to recessionary influences, quality of life, etc., and they…

Social Media Can Get You Fired

Just a couple of weeks ago, we wrote about how companies are invading your privacy by inquiring about Facebook, asking people to log in during interviews etc.  We spotted this wonderful infographic about how Social Media can get you fired, and we wanted to share it with you.

For more insights, visit the Heahunter's Secret…

Hiring Challenges – a BOB Infographic

Hiring managers are frustrated. There are more applicants than ever for each position, and it is harder than ever to separate excellence from mediocrity – everyone looks good on paper!   Active and so-called “passive” job seekers continue to pursue alternatives to their current positions, figuring the grass MUST be greener on some other side of the street.  Most employment turnover is caused by bad hiring decisions.  Getting a solid replacement at the executive level can take 18 months…

Secrets of Memory Champions

How’s your memory?  Would you like to know how memory champions increase their skills?  It is important for recruiters and HR managers to remember people, so this is a subject near and dear for us.  And yes, there really are memory competitions, and the champions have to do things like recreate the order of a deck of cards, reel off long lists of numbers, etc.  Most…

Facebook Invasion by Employers

Big news this week on how employers are using Facebook.  It is like your prospective employer wants to see your underwear. Most people keep their Facebook profiles private, available only to true friends, but employers want to peek before they hire.  In the past week, there have been several articles written about how employers are being intrusive into the Facebook…

Who Do You Trust?

There has been a lot written (some by me!) on whether recruiters should trust candidates; and on how much job seekers tell the truth vs lie, etc.

This makes me recall a couple of early TV game shows.  “Who Do You Trust?”, originally hosted by Johnny Carson, was about whether husbands trusted themselves or their wives better to answer the quiz question posted…

Oscar Winning Hiring and Oscar Winning Talent Management

The Academy Awards honor “achievements” in all the key disciplines in movie-making, with acting, directing and writing being most notable.  Other awards, including the ones they don’t even telecast, involve the music, sound, editing, costuming, production design, makeup, and even the science and technology behind what we see on the screen.

This got me thinking…

Don’t be De-Selected

If you are looking for a new job, do you know the difference between a get acquainted call, a screening call and a real interview?

Candidates sometimes go all out, trying to win the job, OR, take the opposite approach and act too casual, and in either case, get deselected before they really had a chance.

If you have submitted your resume to an employer,…

Warren Buffett’s Ten Secrets of Success

I’m not 100% sure if these tips are “officially” from Warren Buffett, but this set of advice is widely attributed to him, and there are plaques in various public places that list these as his ten basic principles of success.  They seem to dovetail with how he has run his business life, so here goes:…

“Search Friction” wins Nobel Prize for Economics

How often does a Nobel prize relate to your daily work? I'm thrilled to report that this week's Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to three brilliant professors who have changed the way the world looks at employment. Classic supply and demand theory would say that when the number of jobs available (demand) and number of people searching (supply) is equal, there should be zero unemployment. But we all know that it doesn't work that way.

Professors Peter A.…

What Questions Do You Have For Me?

[Based on an answer I provided today on a LinkedIN Staffing/Hiring question:]

There is a moment near the end of job interviews when the interviewer finally is relaxed.  When the interviewer has been asking questions, and assessing your answers, they are working.  When you hear the magic question “What questions do you have for me?”, they are ready to relax. …

Understanding Candidate Lies

I write a lot about lying, mostly because it is happening all the time.  Candidates lie to recruiters for a variety of reasons.  Recruiters have to expect a certain amount of lying.  Some of it is even understandable.  Here are some examples:

George says he is willing to relocate, no problem.  Weeks later, many obstacles materialize that would interfere.  These aren’t…
