Paul - that is classic! I was going to use the same one about manholes. I was asked the same question during an interview years ago - I got it wrong but had a strong reasoning for my answer. FYI - if anyone wants to know, the answer is to prevent the manhole cover from ever falling down the manhole. Might help someone if they ever get asked.

@Pam - when people are off-guard, they start getting honest and stop giving you their rehearsed answers. It's a very effective tool to use when you're interviewing salespeople, marketing people, or others who tend to ... 'embellish' a little. I'm not in the room to be entertained, I'm there to find out more about someone, and whether they'd make a good employee. If you want bizarre - you should search "Google Interview Questions."
I'm not a fan of questions designed to put people off-guard or that are so bizarre that there's no good reason to ask them except for the entertainment of the interviewer.

Ilona, I really like your question about common misconceptions. That's one that could generate some useful information you might not discover otherwise.

We use a good list of questions mostly tech focused, some logic and some behavioral but my favorite is asked right in the middle of all of them - What is your super power? My favorite answer so far; I can shoot meat balls from my eye's!

Working for a dot-com, we can ask some pretty niche-geeky type questions. Last year, I enjoyed asking people "what do you think of Adobe vs. Apple?" and see what they said - they didn't have to pick a side, necessarily; I was more interested in their industry knowledge and informed response. Right now, I'm enjoying asking, "what questions do you have for me?" right out of the gate - it actually catches more people off-guard than you'd think.

We ask "What is the most common misconception about you?" We usually get very revealing answers, and candidates don't have cookie cutter answers for that one.

I've heard that Microsoft asks two interesting questions:

1) Why are manhole covers round?

2) How many gas stations are there in the Greater LA area?
