Highlight your company culture in your recruiting!

Yesterday, I was part of a cool event set up by TalentCulture called #TChat. #TChat is a Twitter conversation that happens every Tuesday at 8 EST on various topics on attracting and retaining talent. To join, all you have to do is use the Twitter hashtag #TChat and start contributing.

Last night’s conversation focused on multiple aspects of the concept of company culture including it’s definition, it’s alignment with business objectives and the part it plays in attracting and retaining top talent (Here’s a recap). It’s this last topic that I want to focus on.

Nearly everyone on the chat last night agreed that culture is important in order to attract top talent. To go further, I think compensation and benefits are requirements in attracting top talent (to get your company into consideration) but company culture is the differentiator when a qualified candidate makes their final decision.

Now while everyone thought company culture is very important with attracting top talent, we never really were able to discuss how you can actually go about broadcasting and highlighting your company culture to these qualified job seekers. Every company has a employee culture, it’s just about highlighting the best aspects of it.

Here are a few ways to get the best of your company culture in front of top candidates within your recruitment marketing process:

Get your employees involved: First and foremost, the best way to show off your culture is to get your employees involved in recruiting and talking with candidates. There are a ton of ways to do this but here are a few that come to mind:

  1. Testimonials - Whether written or verbal, employee testimonials in your job ads or on your career site can have a great impact on candidates.
  2. Job Blog - You can get employees to write blog posts about what they are working on, events happening around the office and other perks of working at your company. Enable any employee to write and keep the content updated.
  3. Social Networks - Let candidates know about employees that are Twitter. This can give them insight into what your company is all about.

Invite them to your office: I know the head recruiter at an awesome startup that conducts every 2nd round interview as a big meet & greet at their office with potential candidates and current employees included. This is a great way to see how these candidates interact with others and if they are a good fit with your company culture (& visa versa)

Show them during the apply process: When qualified candidates apply to your job positions why not point them to great content that features your employment brand? Embed videos / web commercials of your employees during the apply process and point them to your career site after they complete the application.

Make your career site a one stop shop - Build your career site to highlight your employment brand and company culture. Incorporate testimonials, fun employee videos and benefits information while highlighting what makes your company special for employees.

Top candidates want to be part of company that is special, they want to work with other great talent and they want to enjoy what they are doing. If you can show them that your company can provide all this, then you should have more qualified talent coming to your doors than you can handle.
