recruiting is like breathing........

so, i was talking to a co-worker today regarding recruiting not being a spectator sport and i remembered something from the ere event last october in washington, d.c. coach jim larranaga of george mason university was talking about the importance of recruiting and how it is the lifeblood of every organization, including his basketball program. coach larranaga's basketball team was just a year and a half removed from an improbable run to the ncaa final four utlimately losing to eventual champion university of florida. the point of his presentation was that we are recruiters and business leaders must realize that recruiting is not just a function of what an organization does everyday it is something we have to do to survive. to paraphrase what he said, recruiting is like breathing.....you have to do it every day all day otherwise your organization will die.

my point is, i see all too often that organization slam on the gas pedal when they feel they have to bring on talent and slam on the brakes when they feel they don't. the truth is if you are recruiting consistently your need to slam on the gas or brake will be mitigated. i am not saying to hire all the time, that wouldn't be smart. i am saying to recruit, fill a pipeline of great talented candidates and when you are ready to hit the pedal, you have gas in the pipeline to get you going.

thanks coach larranaga
