If you’ve been through Malaga airport you can’t help but notice the new terminal (3) which has been bolted on the end of Terminals 1 & 2 making effectively one long shed. It’s very pleasing to look at architecturally speaking. Someone must be very proud of it.

But that’s where it stops being pleasant. Using it is a chore and maybe even more annoying than Leeds Bradford on my flight out. Malaga airport terminal has been planned by idiots or a committee of idiots and I’ll tell you why.

The Jet2 check-in is in Terminal 1 which, as I said, is part of this long shed and once checked in the customer (because that’s what the passenger effectively is) has to walk about half a mile to the end of the new Terminal 3 to go through the new security facility there. It’s all new and shining but really, really annoying. Glass barriers with gaps in it separate airside from Spanish side and there are some convenient tables where you pick up your tray to undress and put your laptop, belt, coat, coins, wallet, watch (and anything else likely to set off the alarms). But here’s the thing. I’ll bet these tables weren’t in the original plan as the customers now have to stand in line holding several trays full of possessions to pass through this glass barrier to get to the scanners. Where were the rollers when you need them?

I took my trainers off too but was told to put them on again. Either Malaga has not heard of Richard Reid (see my blog on Leeds Bradford) or the world is out of synch again. Someone call Superman!

What was funny too was that I ended up outside a huge Duty Free, lovely coffee bars etc but my wife had gone via the short cut with her Father in the wheelchair (see my blog on Leeds Bradford again) through the old facilities in Terminal 1 and had been escorted through passport control to the gate and abandoned there. True, there was a coffee facility and the older Duty Free shop but it wasn’t a patch on the new one where I was a mile away!

It all worked out Ok in the end and we were all reunited but it begs the question; who planned it like this? Not an FM expert, for sure. An escaped lunatic is the obvious answer.
