Using Hiring Data to Compete with Facebook, Google, and Twitter

Recently, ComputerWorld featured an article that demonstrated how Google, Facebook, and Twitter are competing by taking ideas from each other. Twitter became more like Facebook by adding a function that enabled users to upload up to 4 pictures in a Tweet and tag up to 10 contacts in the images.

Facebook, similar to Google, is investing in the future with technology, such as virtual reality, drones, satellites, and laser beams, so they can continue to evolve and innovate. Google is taking on Amazon by using a similar cost cutting strategy for their enterprise cloud services. Job ads are another way you can find out what the competition is up to. By gaining this intelligence you can remain competitive and proactively react to market trends and changes.

We wanted to even the playing field and provide you with more competitive insight to incorporate into your hiring strategy. If you're competing with these companies, it'll help you to know what types of jobs they're filling and what projects these employees will be working on. Below are the most commonly advertised job titles by Google, Facebook, and Twitter, according to WANTED Analytics data.

At each of these companies, Marketing Managers, Software Developers, and Market Research Analysts occupations were most in-demand. You can look at their job ads to understand what new employees will be undertaking in these roles as a signal to what projects companies are working on. As an example, we specifically analyzed Software Developer job ads. Details contained within these listings can reveal more information as developers will be creating technology that can optimize their systems or expand their product lines.

Facebook ads didn't vary much for each job opening. Typically, the ads said that Software Developers at Facebook would be responsible for building the next generation of systems, creating web applications, and building high volume servers. Another ad required a candidate to code high volume payment systems. 

Software Engineers at Twitter are needed to perform a range of responsibilities including, improving mobile technology, maintaining site reliability, building web applications, and productizing data for customer facing analytics dashboards. We also discovered ads for a TwitterTV project, which is seeking candidates to test software components and determine when they meet acceptable quality criteria to be released for production. Additionally, Twitter has job listings for Developers that can help shape the future of Twitter Cards by determining requirements and articulating user needs.

Job ads for Software Engineers at Google require candidates to design client and server side software systems, develop software for Google projects, and create high volume production applications. One indicator of Google's current projects was an ad for a candidate to lead the design, development, and evolution of an automated Android application classification system that can scale to handle a minimum of 500k applications for a mobile app store. Other projects include generating ideas for new products to help advertisers in the keyword suggestion space and developing new software to expand their product offering.
