It’s a fact. Not every available job opportunity is advertised. That can obviously make looking for the perfect role even more difficult however it does provide you with the chance to showcase your networking and investigative skills. Better still, don’t wait for a job opening to apply for it, you may find yourself more successful if you apply for a position before it opens!

Make yourself known

When an organisation identifies a need to create or fill a position, they tend to move fast. When they are unable to perform and meet their service demands it can cost a lot of money.

One key to finding a job before it is advertised is to make yourself known to the companies you have your eye on. Traditionally, sending a resume ‘out of the blue’ may see it end up being filed away and you’ll never hear anything back.

Approach hiring managers and HR reps directly and let them know who you are and what you can do for them. You’ll stand a higher chance of being selected when the time comes.

Network

Networking is one of the most powerful tools anyone can engage in. Start by letting your friends and associates know that you are looking for a contact in a particular company. There is always someone who knows someone.

Get involved and participate in relevant industry functions. Learning to be bold and start up conversations is the perfect way to progress your career.

Leverage off social media

A large number of job seekers find that social media is an effective way to get job leads. Ensure your personal profiles are clean and professional and take the time to put your social networks to the test.

Connecting with people on LinkedIn, for example, and making yourself a regular in groups related to an industry you have an interest in can work wonders.

Making a phone call

Sometimes the simple approach can be the best approach. Narrow down a list of companies and call them. If you cannot locate the name of the recruiting manager online, you can always ask the receptionist.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of timing. If you happen to call at the right time, and you are a strong enough candidate, a job won’t need to be advertised.

Seeking work online

Many organisations choose to bypass traditional advertising venues and agencies because of the ongoing finders fee that accompanies employees. As a result, you’ll find a plethora of job opportunities online in places you may not even consider. Did you know that Gumtree has thousands of available jobs right now on offer?

You may just find that a small business that needs someone with your exact qualifications contacts you.
When it comes to searching for a job, set yourself a part from the crowd by being proactive and a little different. Taking the time to speak to the right people can pay off in many ways and you could actually find yourself in the job of your dreams that was never even posted.

Great article.

I once heard that 90% of the jobs out there are not advertised externally.

I have always taken the view that by getting out there and being pro-active, a candidate can discover new opportunities at the same time as demonstrating their committment and enthusiasm to a prospective employer.
