If you’ve just been promoted and you’re wondering how to do a good job being at the helm of a project, you first need to interact with all the members of your team. You’re only as good a leader as your team.

Invest In Yourself

Going back to the basics and introspecting is the first step towards being a better leader. Comprehend what motivates you and keeps you going. Figure out what it is about your job that you really love doing. If you want to make a change then you have to believe in it, and be the difference that you want to see. Accept your flaws, and know your limitations. This way, you can capitalise on your strengths, and work your way to to success. Draw inspiration from role models like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates who revolutionised software, technology and networking.

Integrity Is Important

Trust has been replaced with a new term called “Value-Based Leadership”. According to a senior recruiter at Aditi Staffing "Make yourself approachable, so that your employees can come up to you and voice their difficulties. As a leader, your commitment to your project should never be questioned. Be fair and honest while giving feedback to your teammates. At the end, you are accountable for your team’s progress and well-being".

Set Achievable Goals

Running after deadlines and targets is an occupational hazard. However, make sure that you set goals that are within the realm of reality, i.e, they have to be achievable. You have to continuously evaluate and engage with your team to keep everybody on track.

Never Stop Learning

A professional never stops acquiring knowledge, regardless of age. In this dynamic world of IT, it helps to keep yourself up-to-date on the latest softwares and tools. Always be a step ahead so that you can constantly mentor your team. Use online resources like videos and tutorial sites to master complex techniques, which are broken down into smaller, and easy-to-learn parts.

Empathy Goes A Long Way

You have to be a good listener to be able to communicate effectively with your team, encouraging them like a wingman. Walk in your subordinate’s shoes and understand their point of view before imposing your own. Share your success with your team and ensure that you set aside some time for fun things to do together. Informal outings are a great way to bond, and this also helps reduce work-related stress. To get the best out of your people, you have to mentor them and help them reach their potential. Shower praise on the deserving, and help those who’re struggling.

Always remember that you have to lead by example, if you want the majority of your bunch to follow you. Transparency and consistency will help you map your progress and go a long way in raising the bar of excellence.
