10 Ways to help prevent New Hires from Culture Shock

New employees can be fresh graduates from a college who are not at all familiar with a professional culture or even experienced employees who are totally unaware of the current company policies. But if these new hires are not made familiarize with their new surroundings they might face culture shock that can hamper their productivity at work. Here are our 10 best tricks to prevent this from happening.

1. Give them a buddy
A present employee of the company can well be put as a buddy for the new joinees. The best would be if they are from the same team. The buddy will help them to familiarize with coworkers, current project, policies and even office hangout places.

2. Induction programs

Induction programs are another way to familiarize new employees with office policies including work timings, HR policies, accounts policies, leave policies, performance and appraisals etc. This is a perfect eye-opener for the new hires.

3. Outings to make them familiarize with new city

Team dine-outs or sport outings or casual hangout meetings are the best methods to make new hires familiarize with new city and get to gel with coworkers. This is the most effective indirect way of bringing out productivity from them.

4. Invite them to carpooling

Introduce new hires to co-workers who travel from same location or similar route from home to office. Carpooling can help them to reach office on time without navigation problem in the new city and get to know other coworkers.

5. Familiarize with office terms

After a serious day at work, little moments of fun is the best way to rejuvenate the employees. Make them aware about hangout places, lunch area, funny lingos and even office phrases used on the floor etc. After all making them comfortable is the idea.

6. Not just current project but others as well

For sure new hires are supposed to work on the project they are hired for. But they must also be briefly introduced to other projects/verticals as well. This will give them a complete idea of the current business and how other teams are working.

7. Run volunteer projects

Volunteer projects can be social project or even office outings planning (not necessarily related to office work). Such activities involve employees from various verticals and make them work together. A most preferred way to bring bonding among the employees.

8. Create a fun packet

A positive feeling on the first day will surely give a push to the new employees for a long term relationship with the company. Try to assemble a fun packet for them that can include – artistic calendar, photo frames, coffee mugs, office stationary, or even decorative plants.

9. Worksheet in advance

As new employees would be struggling to get along with the surroundings, the best managers can do is to prepare in advance worksheet or datasheet about what the project is all about, what has been done till now, how much user base acquired and what new employees are expected to do for coming week and coming month.

10. Extra-curricular is important too

HRs should look to explore more about the extra-curricular activities of the new employees and introduce them to different clubs and their activities. This initiative will surely connect new joinees with their new organisation.

The above tricks can for sure put the new employees at some comfort zone and better productivity at work. During induction programs, HRs can also give them a glimpse of the web based recruiting software they have used while hiring these employees. They might have come across it while applying to job openings through company’s website, free job postings sites or even through bulk emailing done from this platform.
