As you begin your startup, you are concerned about getting the idea, getting the funding & getting the customers. But at some point, you want to start thinking about getting a Human Resources specialist on board as well. It is no fun to have to use the restricted funds to someone in the "cost center" role, but making someone onboard at the right time will save you money in the long run. Here are 4 signs to understand why HR is important in an Organization.

1. You are growing fast

Need to hire new people is always a good sign for your business. But are you capable of handling recruitment process at the cost of devoting your time on what you are good at? Or is it feasible for your team managers to start screening candidates to fill the positions? Having a HR specialist to take care of sourcing the profiles, coordinate with teams, organise interviews, write offer letters, & maintaining the background checks and onboarding process can make the office run much more smoothly.

2. You are having a culture crisis

As the owner or CEO of the company you have set the culture to begin with, but as the company grows, it is sometimes hard to hold onto that culture, as every employee will have different expectations from the company. Additionally, there is a question of whether to hold on to previously set culture or bring the change. When some employees start to feel disenfranchised, you may lose a good employee. It is a good idea to have a specialist in organizational development to help out.

3. When you want to set better policies in organisation

While creating the new business, you were not much keen on setting the policies, but as employee size grows, it is time to bring some formalities as well. Mostly for making significant policies, HR’s are capable of helping you explain why those policies are important, how to design and implement them and how well to convey the message to the employees. At the end, you also need someone who can stand up to you & say, "No, that is unethical & illegal."

4. You require help with the people side of things

You are an expert in the product or service, but are you a specialist on ‘the People’ as well? A good HR professional can aid to determine what will make employees the comfortable & most productive. HR’s can decrease the amount of paperwork on the desk, & develop processes that can streamline personnel matters. HR’s can also counsel, coach, advise employees & help smooth over ruffled feathers. This skill does not come naturally to every startup founder, so it is worth looking.

5. You are struggling with manual recruitment process

Because the primary purpose of HR is to support the business success, having an effective recruitment process is of utmost importance. HR professionals, not only have the right skills and knowledge, but also they can share the vision of the company with the targeted candidates. HR’s carry expertise in implementing online recruitment management tools to bring quick closures for fast growing companies.

Here in the US, you have to hire an HR representative after you hit a certain number of employees. Is that a global policy?

Not a global policy. Hiring an HR representative after you hit a certain number of employees is not mandated by law in the Caribbean island countries.

Although it is not mandatory by law (in India) to have HR representative after you hit a certain number of employees, but these days organisations are taking it seriously and trying to maintain a ratio of 1 HR per 50 employee. (Avg figure)
