Forget Millennials – try the iGeneration!

Millennials are lazy, expect everything to be handed to them and they’re impatient about it. Well that’s what we’ve all read over the last few years. This isn’t another blog picking apart these points, mainly because I don’t agree with it, but also because I’ve begun to experience what some are calling the iGeneration.

iGeneration

Usually known as Generation Z, the iGeneration have been pegged as ‘Global, social, visual and technological’. Those that have grown up thinking the world literally is their oyster, able to Skype with their mates who live around the corner whilst gaming with someone the other side of the world all in one evening.

Apparently though, they have short attention spans from the years of having many forms of entertainment on the go at once and they don’t take information in fully due to their ability to skip things (TV adverts are a prime example, my nieces can’t believe we used to watch them all the way through)! They also struggle under pressure because, like millennials, they’ve been told they can be whatever they want in the world, and then find out they can’t.

So, last year was the first time we attracted and hired a school leaver. Previously we had mainly stuck to graduates and experienced individuals, for no reason other than we’ve always attracted plenty!

Enlightened

Ryan Tosh (pictured above), the superstar we attracted from a local sixth form, is honestly one of the hardest working, committed and driven individuals I have come across. He continues to impress me and at only eight months into his employment here he is now working at the same level as our graduate employees. He’s the envy of all his mates who went to Uni, able to afford his own apartment and be financially independent. Pretty cool!

Learning

What have I learnt? That I can’t wait to attract more members of the ‘iGeneration’. We have started the hiring process for this year and I continue to meet impressive individuals.

Most of the ‘characteristics’ that researchers are reporting about them actually make them ideal for this type of role. Able to filter ideal candidates quickly, understand and segment data/information fast, look after volumes of data and juggle various jobs at once.

Not only that, they’re brave. They don’t seem to have the fear that I remember having at that age.
