Building Your Team: 4 Recruiting Tips for New Businesses

You understand that the best resource your business has is your employees. When you find people who can work with your business culture and can contribute to the success of the organization, you have found a great thing. Recruiting good talent is a challenge. Keeping these individuals once you found them is even harder. The following are four tips that can help you when recruiting for a new business.

Develop a Reputation as Being a Great Employer

Being a great employer is not enough. People need to know why working for you is in their best interest. When it comes to recruiting, work on building your company’s brand. You want the best prospects to seek you out because they know you will respect the work they do. Google is seen by many as one of the best companies to work for. As a result, annually they receive more than 3 million job applications.

Pay Better

When recruiting, you will get what you pay for. Look at the compensation other individuals in your industry are offering. To attract the best candidates, the pay you offer has to be better. As a new business owner, you may not have developed the reputation that some of your more established competition has. But if you offer more money, good talent may be willing to give you a chance. You might to be able to recruit good talent at a lower wage because they are in a financial bind. However, as soon as a better offer comes along, they are gone because low pay makes them feel underappreciated.

Emphasize the Benefits of Working for Your New Business

Your company will be more attractive to potential employees if they know things like flexible work hours, the option to work at home, in-house childcare, etc. are on the table. Talented people want a challenge. They want to know that there are opportunities for advancing, improving their skill, or gaining new responsibilities. Talented people like to be rewarded for their success. If your new business offers profit-sharing, advertise this. This will not only help you recruit but will also help to motivate new employees to stick around.

Recruit Candidates Who Are the Right Fit

A potential recruit may look great on paper. They may have all of the credentials you want. But credentials and skills are separate things. Objectively put each candidate to the test. Create tests that evaluate for the skills you need in your new business.

Personality is another factor. Make sure you evaluate and identify personality traits that will enhance your business as well as detract from it and make recruiting decisions based on these. It can also be a good idea to retain a corporate attorney like Carter West or someone similar to advise you of any potential legal issues you may run into.

Staffing your new business with the right people is key for success. Do your part by being a good employer. Do not be afraid to pay quality people what they’re worth. Advertise the benefits of working for you. Be diligent in finding the candidates with the right personality for your new business.
