All over the United States, laws are being passed forbidding people from asking for salary histories or what kind of benefits they receive. The idea is that certain wage gaps will close if no one can be biased. Unfortunately, it will have the opposite effect.

Here at Prime Financial Recruiting, we ask each candidate how much their base salary is. There are a few reasons as to why: 

1) We know how much you should be making. Your current employer may be underpaying you. When we prepare you to interview, one of the things we disclose is the salary and benefits being offered, so you won't get thrown off during the interview.

2) If a company is looking to fill a position that pays $75k, we won't waste your time by sending you to them if you make $100k. Likewise, if you have a family to provide for and don't want to lose your health insurance, knowing that enables us to negotiate it with the potential employer.

3) Having an open dialogue, wherever you work, can uncover any unfairness that may exist. Black women still make only $0.64 for every dollar an equally qualified white man makes. Talking about your salary could reveal the difference and result in a raise!

4) Accidents happen. Perhaps a hiring manager had salaries at a set rate, but then left the company. Another hiring manager comes along and sets a different rate. By letting us know what you make, we can make sure this is one accident that won't happen.

5) While this doesn't apply to all recruiting companies, some recruiters make a percentage of your salary as a commission. This means the more you make, the more they make. These recruiters will be further incentivized for you to have a better salary so that they get a better commission.
