1. Keep in real: With my potential candidates, clients, leaders and peers. I don’t misrepresent my efforts, job descriptions, candidate qualifications or anything that will lead to a disappointment if not wholesomely true. When you keep everything real- everyone on the deal stays educated on the facts and can make decisions without distress.
2. Natural Curiosity: I try to explore one new tool or website a day. I usually exceed this attempt, but there are certainly days where I just can’t find 5 minutes for this daily goal. However, when I am focused on my day I explore at least one new micro blogging site, social network, niche job board, LinkedIn group (etc…) a day.
3. Learn and Share: I make room for a webinar or two a month. I return to hosts who I love to listen and learn from as well as take a webinar from someone I’ve never learned from. You can always pull at least one idea off of a session. I share what I’ve taken from my classes with peers and those who I am training.
4. Network: Duh! Networking has helped me find some very hard-to-find people. I stay connected with other recruiters, with placed candidates, with candidates who I’ve not been able to assist and of course all the people I meet along the way in my personal life. I have had help in searches from salsa partners, old college professors, old classmates, past colleagues, etc… I never underestimate the power of a new friendship or relationship and who they may know.
5. Have fun: I have fun every day. I make sure I love what I do, loving what you do makes you successful; it allows you to spend Sunday afternoons at a networking brunch without being bitter for missing the Giants play-off game (plus there’s always YouTube highlights). I have a personality and I use it, with my clients, with my candidates and with anyone who wants to hear about my passion for recruiting.
