When I make a decision that my 5 year old disagrees with I like to tell him that it’s all about me. He emphatically tells me that it’s not all about me, it’s all about God. Cracks me up. So in most cases in my life, it’s not all about me. However, in some ways in business it is all about me. Back in the Great Depression, many businesses in many industries went out of business. But not all of them. There are those in all industries who survived and came out stronger in the end.

For Christmas this year I bought my wife a Kindle. These things are really cool and I think they are another step in the reduction of the size of the printing industry. Will we get to the point where there is no printing at all? No probably never but with all the advances in technology, the internet, and things like the Kindle that industry is going through some incredible changes and will come out much smaller. We are working on two positions right now in a printing and bindery operation, putting books together. Not only is this client in business, they are growing and need help finding the right people for these positions. They have swallowed up some competitors and watched others go out of business. They are in a much stronger position in their industry now, partly because of the downturn and primarily because of their strength and their actions.

While times are tough in many industries, including recruiting, it’s best not to get too wrapped up in the overall picture. Don’t get me wrong, we need to know what is going on in business in general and our industry in particular, but in the end it is all about what you are doing in your particular operation. With the outside factors in mind, focus on your business and making it stronger. It’s not all about what is happening in the rest of the business world, it really is all about me.

Very good, Todd! It usally is all about me, but most folks are not willing to admit that it is "all about me!"
