The Hotjobs/Monster merger doesn't matter

Question: What happens when two dinosaurs mate in the last days before their extinction?

Answer: Um, yes… the both still become extinct.


In my opinion, as a former consumer and current recruitment marketing pro, HotJobs had been a dying brand since Yahoo! purchased it. Like many other Yahoo acquisitions, HotJobs failed because it was expected to earn without the new parent's assistance in continuing to move the product on its previous trajectory. Yahoo purchased the site and instead of continuing to innovate they let it sit and sit and sit. It's obvious to me that the sales teams drove forward, fighting their ever uphill battle, but neither the product nor its consumers ever benefited from Yahoo's ownership of HotJobs.


With the advent of job search engines and more niche-focussed job boards, Hotjobs fulfilled no role in the current recruitment climate...

I totally agree that niche job boards are making these generalist job boards obsolete. Besides targeting industries, they also effectively limit competition for a posted job only to the other registered board members. On our medical sales job board, http://www.gorillamedicalsales.com , our database of candidates is only 6000 total. Thus the competition is limited and the listings are focused on jobs in medical sales.
