Jeff--Thanks for sharing one of the standard tricks of the trade.  However, some entities are like Fort Knox, e.g., classified areas in aerospace and defense programs. 

 

I recall leaving a former employer after working there for eight years and calling back into an old acquaintance I personally knew and recruited for in years past--and say, "Just calling back to say, Hello, and asking how the NASP program was going?"...only to hear dead silence and a change of subject.  I immediately recognized the the code of silence being applied and politely signed off.

So yes, phone surfing works but will get you only so far.
