what books would you recommend to a beginner??

There's always been that one good book or great video that someone kept or refers to when they start out in recruiting.  Being that there is so much to chose from out there with mixed reviews.... how does someone like me who is a beginner choose??

So Please, to all the great recruiters that wouldn't mind sharing some advice as to what books, videos, webinars, sites to look at or read would be a great help to all the "rookies"  like me ?

I completely agree with Pam Claughton - the book 'Breakthrough!' by Steve Finkel is my bible when it comes to recruitment.  It will appeal to recruitment professionals of all levels and covers the majority of points featured in the multitude of recruitment training literature, but all within one book.  I cannot recommend it highly enough.  You can find more on the book here:

Best of luck with your recruitment career!

Mario,

You're getting good advice here and will discover a virtual library of books that will provide great insights and particularly Dos and Don'ts.

Don't overlook formal interview training and continue to network as you're doing now and ASK ASK ASK.  Your good common sense to ask for advice and insights makes you a student of the discipline.  I've been in the business for 38 years now and am still a student...always adjusting to changes and input from professionals in the trenches that will continue to impact the art form.

In the midst of gaining new knowledge in the business of recruiting don't forget your upbringing--to be fair, decent, ethical and empathetic toward others.  You will discover that these values will gird you for the challenges ahead because as Kimberly Roden mentioned..."being able to maintain relationships is not as easy as it sounds."

Bottom-line...value added PERFORMANCE will always define you as a keeper.

Thank you all very much for the feedback and recommendations, I have been in the process of looking them up and ordering some of them. This clarifies which resources for beginners to invest in, so again thanks a lot.

Hi Mario,

"Offered And Accepted: A Recruiter's Guide to Sales" was published last July - reviews have been great and Recruiters from the US, the UK, ANZ Asia and South Africa have bought it. It's only available from my website at the moment and I'm working to secure wider distribution.

Email your address to me at n.brooks@offeredandaccepted.com.au and I'll happily send a copy to you to review.

My website is www.offeredandaccepted.com.au  and there additional reviews on my LinkedIn profile.

I also really like Bill Radin and have signed up as part of the inner circle group with Mike Gionta at www.recruiteru.com. Gionta stuff also intros one to loads of other top trainers that he interviews etc. With 15+ yrs in the business I was able to immediately tell that Mike is still very close to the day to day issues. Both these guys are totally solid!

Jason Davis (slouch) has very interesting comments to follow as well. (at the risk of brown-nosing!)
