Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that most of the blogs in the past week or two have zero comments?  Why is that?  Is it because there is now a "like" button to use (FB rip-off) and it's easier to like than to comment?  Duh......yes it is.  But here's the point.  No comments.  No interaction.  It seems that the only posts that get a lot of comments are the very controversial posts that "raise-up" the blood-pressure because they hit hot buttons in most of us.  And I love a great "hot topic".  I think most of us do.

No comments might equate to what's being posted is just plain dull and boring and none of us really care about it.  Or if you "sort of" care about it, you just "like it" instead and then move on?  A lot of the blog content of late is either dull..........boring.........basic....repetitive.......blah, blah, blah.  You get the point.  Or worse........they are cryptic advertising for someones firm/company/etc.

Here's the challenge.  Remove your ego before you write a blog and post it.  Ask yourself.........Is this really, really great information?  Is it interesting?  Is it a little controversial, but educational and meaningful?  If you can do that before you hit the "post" button, maybe, just maybe you'll get comments rather than a like.  I'm sure I'll get neither from this post, but that's not the point.  It's been bugging me for a couple of weeks and I had to bring it forward.  I'm not coming here much lately because it's becoming a snoozer.  Let's make this site content "hot" again.  Jerry and Sandra aren't the only ones who can write a great post.  There's gotta be more of you out there.  Right?

First of all - Jerry and Sandra have terrific posts. :) Hard to compete with that.

Secondly, I agree! Lately I've just been skimming and not commenting because, to be honest, I don't understand half of what's being said... As you mentioned I feel like a lot of the posts are thinly veiled ads for whatever hot new solution is out there to change our lives.

As an occasional poster, I love the comments I get and would feel bad if I wrote a blog that didn't get at least a little commentary. Even the commenters who disagree with me are welcome - it's all about driving the conversation and maybe even learning something from an opposing viewpoint.

But here's the deal, you write about interesting stuff........even about crying on the job!  Now that's content.  A bit emotional, but content just the same that we all experience and it had a purpose and a meaning.  Not some metrics crap that just goes on and on and on and on!

haha thanks Peter... that was tough to admit but it's true! My Irish got the better of me! :)

Point well made my friend.  I agree that most of the blogs are self promotion or just flat out marketing or the same old tired stuff.  I think if everybody would quit trying to write something innovating and earth shaking about a global view of where and how recruiting is or should be in the future and instead talk about things that are happening to them in their world today.

I have reached the point where when i see a headline that says, "5 things, 10 reasons, 42,000 ways to", i scroll on down.  Somebody mentioned that headlines with numbers like that get a better SEO.  Well wonderful.  I guess i need to write one with a headline that says, "423,000 reasons i won't read your pithy blog that is headlined with numbers.  Blat!

If i see one more blog asking if resumes are dead, which is the best ATS, a sophmoric tutorial on how to use social media, the only comment to make is "No shit, so what, who cares".

I cannot believe that people who are in recruiting don't have a story to share about what happened on my way to a placement today.  Amy gets a lot of comments and has a following because what she writes about is real, it happened to her today and it invites input.  Jerry and I get some play because we are outspoken old crumudgeons who aren't trying to impress anybody with our esoteric view of the global world of freaking "recruitiment".  If recruiters get anymore preposterous with the junk they are reguritating out there to try and impress themselves about how wonderful and innovative they are we might as well end each offering with the line.  "Comments are closed for this blog because anybody who would read all this must be so bored that their opinion is every bit as boring as this mess.  ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"

God, I almost titled my post 1 million zero comments.  So glad that I didn't now.  You would have skipped right over it!

However.............your points are very well taken.  Post might consider talking about the "emotional" stuff of recruiting.  Geezuz people.......this is about PEOPLE.........right!  And they are emotives because they're going through one of the biggest trials of their lives.................interviewing for a job they probably want because why are they there as a candidate in the first place........so there are plenty of topics on just that perspective.

BTW........once you remembered it was your birthday last weekend..........did you do anything fun?

Comment by Peter Ceccarelli on September 14, 2012 at 5:26pm

Geez..........up to 5 comments now!  Woo Hoo!  But I guess my 2 don't count.  But 3 anyway (although I did slip Sandra a twenty for commenting).  It's sort of like playing Tiny Towers on my I-Phone.  Racking up the coins and tower bucks!  What a life!

LOL, now that was funny.  I did in fact forget that it was my birthday until i checked in on facebook and had birthday greetings.  I did in fact spend the day with my horses enjoying ,finally, some great fall weather.

I suppose that happens when just being on this side of the flowerbed when the sun comes up is all i need to know about each day.

I really am glad that you didn't title your post 10 reasons you don't get comments on your blog, then list them.  Geezuz, we are not in grade school where we have to have a numbered list of things to think about.

In line with that i have had two experienced professionals this week that i had to redo resumes because they numbered their accomplishments with each job from 1 to 10.  Maybe that is happening because of all these blogs that people can't write unless they have their thoughts numbered.  :)

OMG........now I'm up to 7 comments.  I'm on a fricking roll!  Best day of my life.  Woo Hoo again!

Should I number that?

Glad you b-day was spent with your beloved horses.  And I see there's some rain down there in Texas.  Finally.  Not sure if your neck of the woods is getting any, but hopefully it will make it's way to you if not!

Happy Weekend!

Now you can write one titled, How to get 7 comments on a blog.

Now really Peter, you know me, all of us can be bought but a twenty, i can be bought but i ain't that cheap. !

Comment by Peter Ceccarelli on September 14, 2012 at 5:46pm

You know........I thought that in my mind when I typed "twenty".........thinking.....she'll NEVER work that cheap.  You're too top drawer for that amount of money.  But then I also thought to myself......it's me......she'll do it!  Hah!
