Talent 42: Turning Non Techie Liberal Arts Majors Into Technical Recruiting Stars: Nerd Crushing on Mark Tortorici

TOR-TO-REEEE-CHEEEEEE.....

This was the talk I was waiting for. Mark Tortorici (@marknexus) of netPolarity just wrapped up an amazing session. Where to begin?

This session was all about turning non-technical liberal arts majors who stumbled into recruiting into TECHNICAL RECRUITERS. That's right guys, there's a RIGHT WAY and a WRONG WAY to call engineers. And developers. Or any other technical person. Side note: a data warehouse has nothing to do with forklifts.

My big take-away? Research!

  • The job technology and company
  • Multiple definitions of terms you don’t know
  • Connect the dots between technologies
  • Know your organization's SDLC or PDLC (Attend every engineering talk your company has, even if you’re not invited. I'm totally doing this)
  • Classic engineering roles and definitions. What does it mean in your company?

Learning should be limitless.

Wikipedia is ok, but remember it's created by users – not always accurate Look to the sources. Do you understand other engineering roles? It's also important to know what NOT to look for. So what to do? Look at profile after profile. Read resumes. Research.

Ok, now you have a decent idea of what you're looking for. Go back to your job description. It's time to source. Summarize key terms into a sentence. This is now your elevator pitch. Expand each of your terms ie Develop, Developer, Developing. Use to create a Boolean string. You've got people!

Now talk about the technology with the candidate. The right way, or the wrong way. Asking if they have XYZ experience is WRONG. Talk about HOW they’ve used the technology. Bolster’s credibility. This works with hiring managers too, by the way.

 Overall, an AMAZING presentation.

Definitely the one I was most excited about and Mark did not disappoint. As my girl Sara @ButtersRrecruit noted - we are GEEKING OUT OVER MARK! #nerdcrush :)

This is how I learned. I read EVERYTHING I could find on Tech stuff.  The other thing I did was interview and listen to every tech head I could or would talk to.  I made sure to take notes then memorize everything!!

I was once a lowly liberal arts major who fell into technical recruiting. I learned by reading up on the industry and asking QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS of candidates. New (and veteran) recruiters can't be afraid of admitting when they don't know something...

thanks guys! Mark was terrific - overall an awesome event but yes the key takeaway really was what you both mention - don't be afraid to ask questions!

Sounds like a great talk!  I made the switch to technology recruiting from Financial recruiting.  The best part is  my office is next to our CTO and I can ask him as many questions as I want.  He loves to teach!
