Interesting discussion over on Indian Trainers Yahoo group about the effectiveness of “meetings” that touches on the ethics of lying.

Dear friends, Do u also face this :
I woke up this morning and went over my TO DO list which I prepared last night. After reworking on priorities, I sent some mails before 0900 hours and then had my breakfast to be free to make all important calls. I started making calls at 0930 hours. I have made 22 calls precisely and 100% people have said, 'sorry, i am in a meeting / middle of a discussion. can I call u later?' It is 1130 hours. No one has called back. I find that the entire country is in meetings. In meetings we decide what to do. If we keep identifying tasks, we surely need time to perform them. An 'organisational expert' had proved to a company that meetings in a month had cost them a very heavy amount which was NOT justified by the benefits accrued. Meetings are a good and effective way of executing tasks. BUT we need to look at the perspective of a client, a peer, a subordinate, a senior whose work is getting held up because of your inaccessibility. THINK. Are u disrupting work?

Comment by Nancy Ford on June 30, 2008 at 3:06pm: It also may be that 9:00 a.m. may not be the best time to make your mass calls. ?? I agree that too much time can be/is wasted on "meetings". I also find it effective to try to call when people are just getting back from lunch, or just after the meeting before they go to lunch. :) Thanks for the blog, Maureen. It is thought provoking!

When he has to be roped into going to a "meeting" he said that most of the worker bees are bored and the non workers are busy talking about how to do something and eating dougnuts. " Meetings are a great way to kill time." famous quote by my husband.
