The legitmacy of technical certifications

Just everyone knows upfront- I am a novice at blogging, however I felt like I should just throw something out there that bothers me. I am part of a technical usergroup that I won’t mention and I just got a posting that really bothers me. I just received a posting titled “Obtain VmWare Certification Without Tests(100% Passing Guarantee)” . This obviously caught my attention and so I started reading the posting. Come to find out, there are several certifications including VmWare that you can get with ease according to this email. All you have to do is pay some money to get the certifications and it’s as easy as that. Maybe I am a little idealistic in thought but what happened to earning something the good old fashion way. Granted, I know that some companies don’t view certifications as big as a deal but for the technical person out there paying money to get them they are the one that loses in the end. I am sure there are ways to check to make sure certifications are legitimate and maybe this isn’t a very big deal. This seems like it might be a reason to ask if this ruins the legitimacy of certifications. Thoughts?

Josh,

My suggestion; create your own test that is very targeted to your own systems and applications and then validate among your best people. And then keep changing it over time.

It will do to things; 1) confirm that the certification is probably legitimate and 2) clarify if your greatest needs are likely to be met with this process.

All the Best!
