When you are logged in, you will find a chat area, on the home page, a little ways down. However, when I feel like participating, I usually mouse over the "Talk" link in the navigation bar and then click on "Chat." That takes me to a page where the chat box is larger and easier to work with.

Note: You will see folks who are logged in. That does not mean they are looking at the chat area. So, if you post a hello and don't get a reply... the reality is simply nobody is looking at that time.

There used to be scheduled chat sessions which were a blast. Not sure if any of those are going on any longer. Look for Maren Hogan... she's a big help on this site. She works for the owner. Really sharp gal.
